Dr Martina
Italian and Portuguese language teacher based in Liverpool
About
I am an experienced language teacher. I have acquired my experience by teaching across various educational settings. I have taught languages at Liverpool City Council, worked as a language advisor at the University of Liverpool for two years, and taught at the University of Birmingham. Currently, I am a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Chester, where I teach Italian and Portuguese. In addition to my institutional roles, I have also provided private tutoring to students of all ages and language proficiency levels. I have guided beginners taking their first steps in a language, helped students prepare for qualifications such as A-levels in Portuguese and Italian or the B1 Italian citizenship exam, and supported university students with topic revisions.
Tutoring Approach
I consider my lessons to be relaxing and informal. Sessions are highly interactive, with a lot of conversation mixed with grammar and exercises. I believe in the use of visual-communicative materials like videos and audio support. For face-to-face lessons, I provide all necessary printed materials. For online classes, I organize a dedicated Drive folder with all the materials used in the lesson, giving the possibility to students to review them after the class. Additionally, I am happy to provide homework upon request, tailored to the student's goals and preferences.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

My tuition is based upon one lesson per week and I have just had my second lesson. I am looking to learn Italian thoroughly - not merely what is called "tourist Italian. My first impression of Martina was that she looked younger than I thought she would be. I wanted a mature, experienced language teacher. However, I needn't have worried because Martina clearly has plenty of both qualities and, in just two lessons, she has made herself invaluable to me. I am not a total beginner of Italian and I was struggling badly in class. I realise that everybody has his own learning style and, for a teacher, it must be difficult to try and cover as many styles as possible so the benefit of having a private tutor is enormous - especially if that tutor is someone like Martina. I told Martina exactly what I required and, so far, she is following it to the letter and, in only two lessons, I understand more than I did previously. As for Martina's personal qualities, she makes a good impression on first contact … she has a friendly but professional manner. She is empathetic but firm; she listens and is willing and able to explain in detail; she has an excellent teaching method with a good sense of humour (appropriately placed). For both lessons, she has been ready and waiting for me - and off we go! For anyone wishing to learn, or improve their, Italian, I cannot recommend Martina highly enough and I'm so glad I found her. (I am a retired teacher which makes me ultra-fussy about teaching skills where my own learning is concerned. Probably daunting for a young tutor but I don't think that this fazes Martina!).
