Harry
GCSE and A Level tutor for History, English, Politics, Philosophy, RS, and Maths
About
After studying A levels in history, politics, philosohy and physics, Harry graduated from Oxford University with a degree in theology in 2009. He then studied as a professional jazz musician at Trinity College of Music, graduating with a master's in music in 2012. It was as a saxophone teacher that Harry began his journey as a tutor, quickly moving into a career tutoring the humanities, maths, and school entrance exams six days a week.
In order to consolidate and augment his teaching skills, Harry took a PGCE while teaching religious studies at two schools in south west London: Richmond Park Academy, and St John Bosco College. During this year, Harry had formal training for work with SEN students. After this year working in the classroom, Harry returned to tutoring full time, while continuing to enjoy life as a jazz saxophone player in his spare time.
Harry has tutored hundreds of students studying for examinations in history, politics, religious studies, philosophy, maths, and English, of many different ages and backgrounds, from 10 year olds working towards the 11 plus exam, to GCSE and A level students, to Oxbridge entry for PPE, theology, history, and philosophy, to students retaking A levels after leaving school, and adult learners working on university dissertations. Harry works with 16 to 18 year olds more than any other age group, and is particularly experienced in helping students make the great leap from GCSE level short question writing to rigourous university level essay writing.
Harry also has extensive, daily experience homeschooling students of myriad backgrounds over the previous ten years. Harry most enjoys drawing out the connections between the subjects he teaches, helping students move towards a broad literacy and passion for intellectual discovery that undergirds a life long love of learning, far beyond the mere prologue that is formal schooling.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Harry tutored my daughter through Easter 2025 for Philosophy & Ethics and History His personal style is very approachable and his teaching is comprehensive - from learning good study habits to the subjects themselves. My daughter really liked and respected him. Then the proof - Philosophy & Ethics - she went from a D in the mocks to an A, History she went from a C to an A Harry's teaching and focus was fundamental to her doing so well. Thank you Harry, you are a star tutor!

I cannot recommend Harry enough as a tutor. His first objective is to understand who he is tutoring and then he tailors his approach accordingly. If you have a child capable of an A star and who will work, he will get the result. Having said that, Harry will care just as much about encouraging a less confident student. He is a gem.
Harry replied
Thank you so much, Katharine!

Spiro
Harry is passionate about teaching, and will always try to find a way to get the subject matter across, often going above and beyond. He’s open minded, and happy to hear differing points of view, but everything he says is backed up by learning as opposed to a ‘it’s this way because I say it’s this way’ approach! A very intelligent and likeable chap… won’t be going anywhere else!
Harry replied
Thank you Spiro!

Harry is clearly an expert in his field and he uses his expertise alongside engaging teaching methods. He has quickly come to understand the requirements of my daughter and what is needed to improve her level. He also incorporates the student's wishes as well as guiding the student towards successful learning and application. I would definitely recommend Harry to other GCSE students.

Harry has been a great help in my English GCSE, creating interesting, enjoyable lessons, as well as making helping me to understand difficult literature like Dickens' 'Hard Times.' I had been off school for a while, and was planning to delay my exams for a year, however have been able to catch back up with Harry's assistance. It's been great fun working with Harry, and I would thoroughly recommend his exceptional teaching skills.
Harry replied
Thank you, Arjun.

Harry taught me both A level Religious studies and A level Philosophy and was a fantastic tutor. Although he only taught me for my last two terms of college the improvement I made academically because of his teaching was astounding. He pushed me to read beyond the course and taught me a new method of taking notes and remembering key terms which made me much more prepared going into my exams. He has a real passion for the subjects he teaches which is clear through his lessons which were not only useful but engaging and interesting. He adapts his teaching style depending on what you need help with and always makes himself available for help even when not in lessons. Harry made me push myself academically which caused my grades and confidence to grow throughout my lessons.

Always well prepared with lots off notes. My son really enjoyed working with Harry. I will highly recommend him as a tutor! I will also ask Harry to help my other son in history and English GCSE. Harry tutored me in A Level Government and Politics. He has great subject knowledge, pushed me to read beyond the course and taught me a new method of note-taking which made me much more confident going into my exams. He adapts his teaching style to suit the way you learn best and helped me to diagnose and address weak points in my essay style.

Pia
My daughter Pia, who is doing her Politics A'level at the moment sourced Harry feeling she needed that extra boost of confidence that 1:1 tutoring can bring. Harry has been a great success. Available seemingly at all hours and even for 3 hour stretches, Skype tutorials and giving a last minute confidence boost by telephone on the morning of her exam. Pia tells me that as well as making the sessions extremely useful they have been interesting and engaging, which I think is quite an achievement after 3 hours of talking Politics! He has been worth every penny and I shall be calling him next year when my son does his GCSE's! Thank you. Louise
