About
In my day job I am a study skills tutor for several universities and colleges, primarily working with students with dyslexia, autism and ADHD. A former journalist, and author of several books, I am currently studying for my TEFL qualification. For the past 12 years I have worked with students, most of whom are working towards their National 5 and Higher English exams. I can see students online and also in person.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Zach
Finding Jackie is without doubt the best thing that we have did to help Zach get though higher English. His level of work and understanding of how to get through the work has improved massively. Jackie set out a program of work based on Zachs needs, having sampled some of his early work she focused on on his weaknesses and brought him up to the right standard to ensure a solid pass in his final exam. we would highly recommend Jackie.

Many thanks for the feedback - much appreciated. I am looking forward to hearing how Zac gets on in August, and am feeling very positive for him. Jackie

Jackie was able to encourage my son to to do more than he thought he was capable of and had we had longer I think he would have regained his confidence in English that he had lost. I would be happy to recommend her and will use her skills as a tutor again in the future.
Jackie C replied
Thanks for the feedback Anne. Sean has real potential to do well in English and I would love to work with him again and see him achieve the grades he deserves.

Jackie is a very good tutor. She listens, advises and tries to help make things positive. Our son Taylor really likes Jackie, which makes a big difference. She could go into any environment and make things positive. She is polite, respectful and considerate in manner. How anyone could possibly say it's about colour or race is beyond me. Jackie has advised and helped us on a few issues with our son. No complaints at all. Highly recommended.

Jackie has been tutoring my daughter for 5 months now and i have seen a huge improvement in her. I find Jackie extremely professional and she has such a reassuring and calming effect on my daughter who suffers greatly with lack of confidence. I was upset to read an earlier review which suggested that Jackie might not want to tutor asian people. This could not be further from the truth as i myself and my daughter are also asian and we get on so well with Jackie, i would even go so far as to say that we have become friends. Jackie has given me and my daughter hope for the future, i wish i had found Jackie sooner, she such a star!
Jackie C replied
Thanks for the feedback Rosie. Vanessa is fantastic and has loads of potential.

I only had one session with jackie and it wasnt a full session it was less than half an hour because she was late and she had to go elsewhere after. I am sorry to say but i felt she wasn't comfrtable with me wich made me a little uncomfortable maybe because im asian I don't know. And i didn't feel she was very keen on helping my son 6 years old. She did not know what to do with him. Her profile is quite impressive but i feel maybe she was like that just with me.
Jackie C replied
I am sorry that you felt I wasn't comfortable. It had nothing to do with you being Asian, but everything to do with the fact that I had been driving round the area for over an hour trying to find the place, which as I explained at the time is why I was late. There was also the fact that your husband was in another room and I knew that you did not want him to know that I was also there to discuss you receiving tuition. Broaching a subject like this, knowing that the person in the next room is not to hear, can be a bit tricky and I must admit I did find it awkward, being unsure whether to mention it in front of the children. I have a son the same age as your son and so I knew that he was doing very well academically and would not benefit from being pushed further. I am experienced enough to know that pushing a six year old too much can be very damaging. The issues with your son were not academic, but more about concentration and focus. Morally I felt that it would have been wrong for me to take money regularly from you. It should also be noted that I charged less than half my hourly amount.
