Tutorperch is a UK directory of independent tutors with one financial event: a £20 one-off finder's fee paid by the student to unlock the tutor's contact details. After that, we step out of the way.
Why we exist
The current model rewards the platform.
Most UK tutoring marketplaces run on commission. They take 15-35% of every lesson you and your tutor agree on, indefinitely, on the strength of a single introduction they made years ago. Students end up paying a markup; tutors end up either absorbing the cut or charging more to cover it. The platform is the only party whose income scales with the relationship.
We built Tutorperch on a different bet: charge once for the introduction, get out of the way, and let the tutor-student relationship belong to the people in it. If the model is right, the tutor takes home more, the student pays less for the same teaching, and the marketplace earns honestly without sitting on top of every lesson for years.
It's a smaller business than the commission model on paper. It's also a fairer one.

What we believe
Four commitments we won't quietly walk back.
No commission, ever
We charge once for an introduction we made once. After that, the tutor-student relationship is yours — no per-lesson cut, no premium tier, nothing recurring.
Manual DBS verification
Every DBS-Verified badge is reviewed by us, by hand — no automated checks. Free to tutors, the badge expires after three years and the tutor has to submit a fresh certificate to keep it.
Refund if no agreement
If you and the tutor never agree a lesson after unlocking, we refund the £20. Removes the risk from the introduction.
Transparent ranking
Tutors rank by reviews, profile depth, and DBS-verified status — never by what they pay us, never by how fast they reply. The signals we use are documented publicly.
For clarity
What we don't do.
- No lesson handling. No video classroom, no scheduling, no escrow, no platform-mediated payments. The lesson itself is between you and the tutor — we don't sit between you.
- No subscription, no upsell. No "premium" tier, no per-message fee, no boosted listings. The £20 unlock fee is the only money on the platform.
- No automated DBS rechecks. Every DBS check is reviewed by a person. We don't put tutors' criminal-records data through any automated verification feed.
- No mass-import of tutor profiles. Every tutor on the directory chose to list. We don't scrape competitor sites.
