About Me
I am an Oxford graduate with over thirty years’ experience of teaching Classics and English to students of all ability from Common Entrance to A level and beyond. I specialise in Latin, Classical Greek, Classical Civilisation, Ancient History, English Literature and English Language.
I build good rapport with my students and encourage them to set high standards for themselves. My aim is to communicate my passion for the Classical world, literature and language to them and to inspire them to find satisfaction and enjoyment in studying.
I have an excellent track record in my results. My students have achieved close to 100% pass rate. 100% of the students that I have prepared for Oxbridge have been offered places.
Tutoring Experience
I have over thirty years’ experience in schools, sixth form colleges and one-to-one private tuition. I also offer support and guidance to undergraduates. I can help you with dissertations and long essays for your degree. I will also proofread and edit your written work.
I am very experienced at helping students prepare for Oxbridge and am very proud that 100% of my students were offered places.
For Common Entrance students at either 11+ or 13+, I can offer preparation for English, Latin and Verbal Reasoning papers.
Tutoring Approach
I endeavour to create a learning environment that is supportive, positive, rewarding and enjoyable. Happy, relaxed students are able to assimilate difficult information with more ease. And the opposite is also sadly familiar. I give my students all the help they need.
I am very familiar with the requirements of the syllabus and the examinations and I can help students to maximise their results by being aware of what the examiners are looking for and the assessment objectives.
I offer unlimited email support and can provide notes, handouts and study aids on most texts and historical periods.
I am willing to offer a discount if you wish to have more than one hour’s tuition per week or if my fees are just not manageable for you.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Eileen as a tutor. My son started his Ancient History and Archeology course at university and in the first few weeks it was obvious he was really struggling with Ancient Greek language. Having not studied any languages at either GCSE or A level, he found it very difficult to get to grips with. The amount of time he was spending trying to learn it was compromising his other topics and he was incredibly anxious. We found Eileen on first tutors and it was the best thing we could have done. She started at the basics and gave a strong foundation to build on, and this had an immediate positive impact. By the end of the year, the module my son was hoping to pass, he managed to get into the grade boundary of a 1st. Realistically, if he did not have Eileen there as constant support, he would not have passed, meaning he would not have been able to select the advanced level Greek Language in year two which is needed to progress onto the MA which he wants to do. The course of his study would have changed. He would not have done as well in his other year one modules either, as prior to Eileen helping, it was all consuming with his time. Eileens knowledge on Ancient History was also helpful in guiding him towards books for other topics and she also related the history of the language to other topics helping to bring more context to what he was learning. On top of this, my son has autism and is very quiet and introvert. Eileen has navigated this beautifully and he really looks forward to his sessions and always takes a lot from them not only in terms of the information, but from the confidence Eileen helps to build. You should have no doubts or any reservations about reaching out to Eileen if you need some extra support.

I would like to convey our immense gratitude to Eileen on behalf of my son Liam and myself for an absolutely outstanding year of tutoring. He picked English A level because he thought he would 'give it a try' and finished the year hugely inspired by the positive experience of being guided through some of the great works of literature which he and Eileen chose together, among them, Shakespeare, Chaucer and Nabokov. It was such a joy to see the pleasure he got from their many discussions about the texts and the level of detail which he relished. Eileen has a gift for teaching and is a superb communicator and inspirational teacher. She was kind , conscientious , professional and flexible. Nothing was too much trouble. To say she went the extra mile is an understatement. He absolutely adored studying with her and he got full marks in his coursework. Eileen is an incredible, classics tutor who makes our lessons, both fun, enjoyable, educational and academic. Eileen is incredible, at filling in the gaps and the struggles I have faced with classics at school, due to not having a qualified Classics tutor at my school. Eileen’s lessons are interesting and enriching. Eileen has helped me through with her vast knowledge and exam materials. As well as her ability to nature, and help me with my writing style and technique - I had a tendency of going down rabbit holes and losing my argument. Eileen is a wonderful teacher who has made all material accessible to me and has never treated me differently for having a disability. Eileen was impeccable with assisting and advising me with my Oxford application, from advising and aiding me write my personal statement to preparation for the entrance examination and practising mock interviews. As with many subjects, the step jump between GCSE and A-level Latin is quite significant and left my daughter struggling to really understand some of the trickier grammar points for prose translation (English to Latin). Although my daughter has only had a few sessions with Eileen so far, she is already finding that Eileen's detailed, yet clear explanations and examples, are already resulting in some lightbulb moments over grammar points that she had, until now, not been able to grasp. I would strongly recommend Eileen - good Latin teachers can be so hard to find!!

My son has just achieved an A* in Classical Civilisation at A level and it's all down to Eileen! He lost most of year 12 with long Covid but in a few months Eileen managed to get through all the material for the lost year and more. She has a friendly and approachable teaching manner and they had great discussions together. He always came out of class inspired and enthusiastic.
