About

Hello, I live in Sunderland. I have a B A (Hons) degree and a Certificate in Education specialising in Maths and English and I have also attended relevant courses (for example in Dyslexia Awareness) and have a Counselling certificate.

I have had approximately 30 years experience of teaching English and Maths and this has included helping pupils to prepare for the SATs tests and for GCSEs. I have worked with children as and adults on a one to one basis and in groups and fully understand the needs of both.

I have had extensive experience teaching in schools and am therefore familiar with the requirements of the national curriculum at key stages 1, 2 3 and 4.

I also have a vast array of resources and past exam papers and can also create resources that are tailor made for a specific pupil.

I enjoy working creatively and will tailor learning to the particular interests of the pupil if necessary as I feel that this makes learning more interesting and meaningful for them. I have established excellent relationships with pupils in the past and have a sensitive, caring and thoughtful approach.

In the first session I carry out an assessment in order to get an idea of the needs of the pupil and use this as a trial session. Pupils don't have to continue unless they are happy with everything

If you need to cancel giving less than 24 hours notice then unfortunately I have to charge for the session as I will have prepared for it

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

I can’t recommend Helen enough, she is brilliant. The difference we saw in our 11 year old son from only the first session was incredible. Seeing him grow in confidence too as well as his maths was amazing.

Helen has been so good with our 8 year old daughter helping her with maths and after only 3 sessions there is already a great improvement in lylas understanding. Helen has a lovely way with children & my daughter is completely at ease with her. I would highly recommend!

Helen was able to quickly assess my daughter's skill level. At first my daughter was totally lacking confidence in GCSE English, and Helen dealt with this by taking her back a key stage, to show her she knew the work. Then Helen returned to GCSE and broke down the work, gave good examples for the explanations and now my daughter is doing a lot better because her confidence is coming back. Home work was set between sessions. I would recommend Helen. Thank you Helen.

    Helen replied

Thank you Sharon I am glad Hannah has managed to bring her new found confidence to school! Helen

Helen has taught our daughter for nearly one year and during that time we have seen our daughter grow in confidence with maths and improve. This has been apparent as she has progressed from being below average to average in maths, exceeding her target set by the school by the end of this school year.

    Helen replied

Thanks for the feedback Claire. I am enjoying tutoring Emma

Only had one lesson so far but very impressed. Lovely manner with my son and spotted his weak areas straight away.
