About
Hi, I’m Matt, a professional Maths Tutor with a BSc in Mathematics (1st class) from the University of Aberdeen and MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems from University of Edinburgh. I also hold a Level 3 Tutor Training Certificate accredited by TQUK. I am friendly, easy going and take great pride in helping people reach their academic potential.

I cover the main syllabuses taught in Scotland and England. I also have experience tutoring international curriculum such as American K-12, South African Matriculation, IGSCE and International A Level. Here is a list of the levels I have most experience with:

How long have I tutored for?
I have over 15 years of tutoring experience and have personally tutored 500+ pupils of varying mathematical ability, which has given me a great insight into the common problems pupils have. After having tutored exclusively face-to-face for many years, the majority of my lessons now happen online.
A large number of my tutees were found through word-of-mouth from former tutees pleased with their results.
What is my approach to tutoring?
I offer both face to face and online lessons. For online I use Zoom for video and an iPad app called Scribble Together Whiteboard which allows for a highly interactive online learning experience. It is very effective, almost like sitting at a table in person but much more efficient! I can also travel or am happy to have lessons in person at my house.
Every student is an individual and deserves to be treated as such. There is no one size fits all approach that works for everyone so I make sure to really understand how all my students think in order to optimise their learning.
During lessons I go as fast or as slow as needed. I can start from the basics and build up or get straight into more advanced concepts. Practice questions are extremely important and lessons usually consist of us working carefully through a question set on a particular topic. It is very important to me that my tutees feel comfortable and their confidence continues to rise with each lesson.

Over the past 4 months we have received weekly tutoring sessions for my daughter who has been sitting her higher maths. Matt has been a great help and we have seen a renewed confidence in our daughter with regard to sitting her exam. Matt has been very flexible in providing support and at times made himself available with very short notice. Our daughter has said that Matt is excellent at explaining maths questions and using different approaches to solve maths problems. We thoroughly recommend Matt as a tutor.

My son has had only his first session with Matt, however, based on my son's feedback and my observations I can confirm that we are both very satisfied with Matt. In summary, I observed Matt to be professional in his approach, focused and interested in finding out what the requirements of his assignment was so to get on the right path from the start. Matt is very approachable and appears relaxed, but focused throughout the session.

We have had Matt since June 2019 to help my daughter Katie with Nat 5 maths. Unfortunately with the exam diet being cancelled this year we don’t know what Katie’s grade will be. Despite this, Matt has been an excellent tutor. If it was not for him, Katie would have not been able to sit Nat 5 maths pre lim. He is a very kind and patient tutor, explains things in an easy way and gets the best out of a student. I would highly recommend Matt

Matt has been helping my son with Maths and physics after a very disastrous start to Nat 5’s. He had two test scores of less than 30% for Physics and prior to the May exams he was achieving marks of 70/80% which is an immense turnaround. Not only has he gained in confidence but Physics is now his favourite subject! Would highly recommend Matt.

I started my HND in electrical engineering in August 2021, when I started I did not think the mathematics would be an issue. Being 32 years old and out of full-time education for some time, I suddenly realised that this was not the case and I was not understanding some of the modules. The further the maths course went on it was beginning to affect my learning due to being able to use what I had previously learned into practice in the course. I found Matthew on (first tutors) after looking through his reviews I reached out for his help. Within the week we had arranged an appointment and started going over what I was not understanding. He is fantastic at what he does and I cannot stress enough that if you are struggling or not understanding something. Reach out to Matthew as he will help you gain the knowledge you need to feel comfortable tackling the problems you face. His knowledge is vast and he can make the most complex of problems seem simple. Even though I had issues with a couple of maths modules I decided to carry on getting lessons from Matthew throughout the year and go over every module I had been taught before my maths exam. I am now better prepared than ever and feel far more confident going into my exam. Without his help and guidance, I am not sure how I would have done in the exam. I am extremely grateful for his help and I will have no hesitation contacting Matthew while I progress further with my course work and degree.

He helped our son, who attends an international school in Germany, to both keep up during the semester and prepare really well for the end-of-term exams. Matthew’s teaching is carried with a focus on the respective term test requirements, so our son was able to achieve excellent results at the midterm and final tests.
