About

I graduated from the University of Leeds with a First Class Masters degree in Mathematics, before completing a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Southampton. I also hold an MSc in Statistics with Applications in Medicine from the University of Southampton, where I was awarded the prize for the highest overall performance in my year group.
I began tutoring during my postgraduate studies, working with both undergraduate and school-age students. Alongside my research, I taught on the MSc Statistics programme at the University of Southampton and worked as a medical statistician for the Medical Research Council.
More than twenty years later, I continue to find tutoring both deeply rewarding and something I am genuinely passionate about. I am committed to helping students develop a secure understanding of mathematics, build confidence in their abilities, and achieve their academic goals. I believe that mathematical ability is not fixed and that, with the right support and guidance, every student can make significant progress.
I have experience working with students across a wide range of ages and abilities, from those who require support with core concepts to those aiming for the highest grades. My approach is patient, supportive, and tailored to the needs of the individual, recognising that different students learn best in different ways.
I have extensive experience supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including those with autism and ADHD. I understand that many students benefit from a structured and flexible approach to learning, and I adapt lessons to suit individual strengths, challenges, and learning preferences. This may involve breaking concepts into smaller steps, using clear and consistent explanations, providing additional opportunities for practice, and adjusting the pace of lessons where appropriate. My aim is to create a supportive learning environment in which students can develop both their mathematical understanding and their confidence.

Lessons are individually planned to meet the needs, ability level, and goals of each student. Whether the focus is on strengthening core skills, improving confidence, preparing for examinations, or achieving the highest grades, lessons are designed to provide the appropriate balance of challenge and support.
A typical lesson will involve reviewing previous work, addressing any difficulties that have arisen, introducing and developing new concepts, and applying these concepts through carefully selected problems. Particular emphasis is placed on developing a thorough understanding of the underlying mathematics rather than simply memorising methods, enabling students to apply their knowledge confidently in unfamiliar situations.
Students are encouraged to identify topics that they find particularly difficult, confusing, or overwhelming. Sessions are then tailored to provide targeted explanations, examples, and practice questions adapted to their specific needs. For students preparing for examinations, lessons also include work on exam technique, problem-solving strategies, and effective revision methods.
Homework is provided where appropriate to consolidate learning and develop independent problem-solving skills. Work completed between lessons is marked and reviewed in advance of the next session, enabling misconceptions and areas of difficulty to be identified early. This allows lesson time to be used as effectively as possible, focusing on areas requiring further support and maximising student progress.
Progress is monitored on an ongoing basis, with feedback available for parents where appropriate. Detailed records of lessons are maintained to ensure continuity and to track development over time.
I have considerable experience supporting students with Special Educational Needs, particularly autism and ADHD. Lessons are adapted to suit the individual learner, with appropriate structure, pacing, and teaching strategies to help students engage with mathematics, build confidence, and achieve their potential. The overall aim of my tuition is to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, and confidence required for long-term success in mathematics.
