About
I am a qualified secondary mathematics teacher with over sixteen years' experience providing private maths tuition from KS1 all the way through to A-Level and into adult education. I also help students prepare for 11+ and other entrance exams. I have helped hundreds of students achieve excellent results in their GCSEs, A Levels or 11+. I estimate that I have provided over 10,000 hours of tuition. I have a PGCE in secondary mathematics and a degree in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Bath. I have taught at Ivybridge Community College and have worked at Plymstock School for over ten years providing one-to-one and small group tuition in addition to my private clients. My passion and enthusiasm for the subject can be traced all the way back to my own school days; I achieved the top grades in mathematics for both GCSE and A Level, studied for additional qualifications (Statistics and Further Mathematics at GCSE and A Level respectively) and regularly took part in the UK Mathematics Challenge, receiving several ‘Best in School’ and gold certificates. My own children are now working their way through primary school and so I am actively involved in supporting them in their own mathematical adventures! I have an excellent track record in helping students meet or exceed their targets, backed up by glowing testimonials from parents. I have QTS status and DBS clearance and am happy to show all certificates/testimonials on request.
I am friendly and approachable and will always tailor my lessons to the needs and abilities of the individual students. I have a passion for mathematics and always try to make my lessons engaging and fun. I teach at the student's pace and work hard to create a safe environment where they feel comfortable to discuss any areas of challenge, at any level. I believe private tuition can be truly transformative in building confidence, unlocking potential and helping students to achieve excellent results. The frequency and length of lessons can be tailored to individual requirements. I have an extensive bank of resources and often make my own, and am equally well-equipped to teach in person or online. I can travel to students' homes or students are welcome to travel to me. My standard rate for individual tuition is £40/hr. I also offer online group tuition. Haven’t had Matthew for long but my son seems to be working really well with him and is motivated. I’m really pleased my son has set himself a maths goal which he has never done before. In a short focused timescale Richard quickly developed a good rapport with my 16 yr old boy. Focusing on his gaps and consolidating what he did know , my sons confidence grew and having been predicted a pass , final GCSE maths was a grade 7. Matthew has been an excellent maths tutor for my 15 year old son who is in year 10. My son is dyslexic and was very reluctant to have a tutor due to a previous neative experience. However, he felt comfortable with Matthew from the first sessions and has been happy to continue. My son has explained that he does not feel comfortable to ask for additional help and explanations in school but is very happy to ask Matthew, who explains new concepts in a clear way. My son feels his maths is definately improving. Matthew began tutoring my son just before lockdown and we transitioned to online tutoring with ease.
