About Me:

I initially pursued law, qualifying as a New York State Attorney and working briefly before changing career to become a full time teacher of English for 11 years. I am qualified in Ireland, the UK and Hong Kong and have vast experience in the state and independent sectors as well as with UK based and international clients for whom English is not their first language.

I have over 12 years of teaching and tutoring experience. In my last school role, I taught and held a whole-school leadership role at an independent school outside London teaching GCSE, IGCSE, HPQ and IBDP English.
Experience:

2023-2025: Senior Teacher and Head of R&D - All-through Independent school outside of London. Selective co-ed private school with boarding, teaching KS3, GCSE, IGCSE language and Literature exam classes and IBDP, as well as HPQ.

Other: IB Senior Examiner for six years. IB Workshop Leader (training IB teachers)

2019-2023: Hong Kong - Head of English at top Hong Kong school- high attaining, selective all-boys school with globally leading results. Taught English Literature, English Language and Literature, English B.
2017-2019: Hong Kong - Teacher of MYP and IBDP English language and Literature in an international private school. (Year 10-13 classes only)
2014-2017: London - Teacher of English in a high-achieving 'Outstanding' school in NW London where the English Dept has a record of 97% (2014/15 results) A*-C in English Language and 100% for Literature. School is 3rd in country for Progress 8.
Other: Progress Leader for Year 8 in English and Head of Behaviour. I was previously the school's Literacy Co-ordinator, focused on improving the literacy levels of students across the school and all Key Stages.
I offer a one-to-one service. I can also teach and accordingly price students in pairs or small groups (please ask).
Online, I can tutor students based anywhere and I have particularly deep experience in Asia.

My teaching style encourages students to value their own opinions and to have confidence. I believe that engaging with texts and ideas is the key to doing well. I have a good sense of humour and am patient, but I am also pedantic and have high expectations for students to work to their potential. My students should become confident and well-trained in assuring accuracy in their work. I am also focused on students acquiring key skills that they can transfer and apply to all texts. I value literacy and homework very much. Parents can expect clear and frequent communication.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

My child has been probably very challenging given how he does not like the subject very much. However, Aisling has been patient and supportive for him. I can see his confidence growing after two months. Thank you.

Aisling has already helped my Year 11 daughter in her English after just a few sessions. She says she feels more confident and her teacher has commented on the improvement as well.

I’ve been looking for a help in english for my 8 (y3) and 13 (y9) years old boys aiming to improve their english attainment. I was hesitant at first to have someone without a personal recommendation, but given Aisling’s profile we decided to have a try. We can not be happier with our decision. We started the lessons from last September and my year 9 child has noticeably improved his performance. He has move his set up in the school and had a better result in creating writing then higher sets. I am convinced that he has improved on other subjects given that his writing and analysis of text has improved. I am also very happy to hear from my younger son exclaiming that would like to have a go and write another article when he is on a lesson with Aisling.

My son has the pleasure of working with Aisling, and I can honestly say she is an excellent English tutor. Her teaching approach is clear, engaging, and tailored to get the best from him, making even the most challenging concepts easier to understand. Aisling is incredibly patient and supportive, always encouraging him to improve his vocabulary, grammar, and writing. She provides ongoing feedback to keep us informed on his progress. Equally, creates a comfortable learning environment to get the best out of him. I highly recommend Aisling to anyone looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable English tutor.

Aisling has been preparing my son for the 13+ exams in June. He has dyspraxia so finds English and all wordy subjects very difficult. Aisling started tutoring him at the beginning of January and has transformed my son's approach to English. In only 3 and a half month his marks have vastly improved not only in English but in other wordy subjects as well. His teachers at school have noticed a real difference in his mock exam and test results. She is always on time, diligent and an inspired teacher. I would highly recommend her to anyone and would be happy to provide a verbal reference.
