With a broad range of experience both in the classroom and as a tutor, I offer support that is carefully tailored to the needs of your child. I have a strong track record of supporting young people to develop confidence in English, to find more enjoyment in the subject and to make more rapid progress towards goals. Whether you’re looking for long-term tutoring or targeted exam preparation, I will work closely with you to ensure that our sessions are engaging, effective and rewarding
I taught English to Years 7-13 for over 20 years and was head of a busy and successful English department for much of that time. Since I left classroom teaching 8 years ago, I’ve been working as a tutor and a GCSE exam marker so I have a very good understanding of the demands of the curriculum and the exams.
When we first meet, I’ll talk with your child about their experiences in English, what they enjoy, and what they find challenging, so I can adapt lessons to suit their needs and interests. I’ll keep in regular contact with you so that we can review progress along the way and adapt sessions accordingly.
My students say that they find my sessions enjoyable and helpful and that they feel more confident as a result of them. Parents have described me as a very caring tutor who has helped their child to engage in the subject and make much better progress towards their goals. Many parents have also commented that the work their children do in my lessons has also had a positive impact on other subjects and my students have always reached or exceeded their target grades.

Ruth is an excellent tutor and a lovely lady. My son has autism and is very nervous around teachers but he got on with Ruth instantly. She has a very caring and calm manner and got to know his "foibles" quickly and directed him in a way he understood. She went out of her way to fit in extra sessions before exams and my son achieved the grade needed to stay on in 6th form, which wouldn't have happened without her tutoring. It's a pity we're not going to need her expertise for his 6th form subjects.
