About
I’m a full-time tutor and former classroom teacher, with sixteen years’ experience teaching Latin and Ancient Greek in leading independent schools and one-to-one. I hold a first-class BA from Cambridge University, an MSt with Distinction from Oxford, and a PhD from Princeton, all in Classics.
Excellent, organised, highly experienced and specific - totally the best.
Parent of a home-educated Latin GCSE student (achieved grade 9)
I’m happy to offer online tuition in Latin and Ancient Greek at KS3, GCSE/iGCSE, A-Level, and degree level, as well as preparation for entrance & scholarship exams for top schools (e.g. King's Scholarship exam at Eton, Challenge and 16+ exam at Westminster, Election at Winchester).
I also regularly support Humanities students with successful applications for top UK and US universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, Stanford, Columbia, and Yale. With experience of the university systems in both the UK and US, I can provide tailored writing support on UCAS personal statements and US Common App essays alike.
Super happy to say I made my grades and am off to Cambridge! Thank you so much for all you did for me! My Latin went really well and I am so grateful to you.
Year 13 student (achieved A*)
I got an A star in Latin! Thank you so much for your help, support, and guidance with the Stanford application and I mean every bit of this - I could not have done it without you!
Year 13 student (achieved A*)
I seek to bring kindness, patience, and creativity to my interactions with all my students, from Year 7 beginners to Year 13s planning their path to university and beyond. My little cat, whose sense of professional boundaries is a work in progress, sometimes climbs on my shoulder during the sessions and helps out.
I don't believe I've ever met a tutor more thoughtful and truly invested in seeing her charges succeed.

Tutoring Experience
A HUGE thank you for all the help you gave to [my son] these past months. He could not have done it without you and your support sessions.
Parent of a Year 11 student (achieved grade 9)
I have experience tutoring students at Birmingham University, Cambridge University, Channing School, Cheltenham Ladies' College, City of London School, Downe House, Durham University, Edinburgh University, Eton, Exeter University, Fettes, Francis Holland, Harrodian, Harrow, Leeds University, Notting Hill and Ealing High School GDST, Old Palace School, Oxford University, Queen's College, Sevenoaks, St Mary's Calne, St Mary's University, St Paul's School, St Paul's Girls' School, The Pilgrims' School, Tonbridge School, Tormead School, Tudor Hall, University College London, University College School, West London Free School, Westminster, Winchester College, Wolsey Hall, and Wycombe Abbey, among others.
[My daughter] was laughing so hard with the way you taught her how to remember some declension. You are great for her and the mnemonic tricks do work!!
Parent of a Year 9 student
Deeply committed to helping my students to achieve the very best results, I stay up-to-date with my professional development training as a teacher. I recently attended the Keynote Educational webinar, “A Level Latin - Aiming for A/A*”, as well as a two-day residential conference on the application of cognitive science and psychology research in the secondary school classroom, to learn how to coach my students to implement effective memorisation techniques.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your working with [my daughter] this summer. You have inspired her and also helped immensely in her maturity at identifying strengths and weaknesses, all while instilling a sense of confidence and nurturing her love of learning. I am so impressed with your methods and strategies.
Parent of a Year 10 student
With a particular interest in the pastoral side of the teaching and learning relationship, especially given the educational and emotional upheavals of the pandemic, I've completed a year-long CPCAB foundational training in mental health counselling as professional development (370 hours’ total qualification time) and volunteered as a mentor for an educational charity.
Due to lockdown, [my son] failed his final year but was allowed to resit. Danielle was fantastic. Her patience, insight and kindness were exactly what my son needed.
Parent of a 3rd-year undergraduate
Tutoring Approach
Latin and Greek are very rewarding subjects but can also be daunting, so I see my job not only as equipping learners with the necessary grammatical and contextual tools to access a different language and culture, but also putting them at ease with warmth, encouragement, and calm. I aim to strike a balance between organisation and versatility, remaining attuned to their changing needs and adapting my approach accordingly.
"Highly recommend -- I was really struggling with my dissertation but Danielle has helped me so much. Her patience, expertise and humour has helped me to create something I am proud of. Worth every penny!"
MA student (achieved Distinction)
I also enjoy supporting applicants through the rigorous Oxbridge application process: guiding them as they craft a compelling personal statement which reflects their own voice, interests, and experiences; assisting them as they prepare for the language admissions tests; pointing them in the direction of relevant articles, books, and podcasts to extend their own learning; helping them to hone their discussion and analytical skills for interview, including planning for questions on material sources and literary interpretation at sight, and considering current issues within the discipline.
Danielle was my Latin tutor from January to the end of exams (A Levels). I am so grateful for her. She has helped me so much and carefully guided me throughout every single session. She has shown me so much support and given me so much confidence and eased my anxiety. I went from getting Bs/Cs to As and A*s, which is literally insane. Danielle has helped me to consolidate the foundations of my subject in order to flourish. She is so passionate at what she does and also very empathetic.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Danielle has been teaching my kid Latin for a few months and we cannot be happier with the lessons she planned for my kid and the way she delivered the lessons. My kid likes her very much and has been looking forward to having the Latin lesson with Danielle every week. Danielle is very approachable and responds to my emails promptly every time with a lot of details and thoughts about my kid's progress and leaning needs. Danielle's extremely strong academic background is definitely over-qualified as a tutor, but I can see that she is really passionate about teaching and sharing her knowledge and understanding about the language with the young kids. Thus, we feel very lucky finding her and we are looking forward to having a long learning journey with her.
Dr Danielle replied
What kind feedback -- thank you! Your child is so motivated and diligent, and such a pleasure to work with. And I look forward to our lessons just as much :)

My daughter enjoys Danielle's friendly attitude and teaching style. My daughter's strengths and development areas are very well understood by Danielle and she adapts her tutoring curriculum accordingly. It has only been a few months, but I can already see a huge improvement in my daughter's knowledge of latin.
Dr Danielle replied
Thank you, Lucie! I'm so glad that your daughter's enjoying the lessons (I am, too!) and making progress.

Danielle has been an excellent tutor to our daughter, who is taking Classical Greek as an additional GCSE. Initially, she built rapport before going on to assess the weaker areas. They have continued to focus on these during the weekly lessons, which has resulted in our daughter being much more confident with the subject. She has enjoyed the lessons too! Danielle has also given us detailed feedback, and made suggestions on the best way forward, which has been reassuring. Highly recommended.
Dr Danielle replied
Many thanks! I'm so happy to hear that the lessons have been helpful.

We’re so glad to have found such a fantastic teacher.

Thank you so much, Lily -- this is really kind. Your child's sense of engagement, commitment, and diligence - not only during the lessons, but also when tackling the independent practice and memorisation (all those Greek verbs!) - has been wonderful to see.

Our daughter has now got the predicted grades she needs to go to a top university, and Danielle has helped with the application process every step of the way, so much so that our daughter trusts her input completely - she also really enjoys the lessons, and they get on like a house on fire. We are so pleased we chose Danielle, she has been everything we asked for, and more.

Danielle is clearly passionate about teaching as is evident in her all-round excellence, dedication and diligence as a tutor! My daughter was getting a little discouraged with the language aspect of her A-level Latin as her marks weren't progressing in the right direction. Danielle has been working hard with her to ensure her individual needs are well-met. My daughter has really enjoyed her lessons with Danielle so far and has found her to be patient, motivating and encouraging. Her warm friendly and approachable personality has also meant that my daughter feels very comfortable clarifying the silliest of grammar questions. Danielle is also professional- prompt in both email communications and lessons. In fact, I've often wondered if she ever sleeps as she will reply to emails even in the late hours! I also appreciate the consistent proactive feedback she provides on my daughter's progress. Without a shadow of a doubt, I would highly recommend Danielle! Thank you Danielle for your help and we look forward to your guidance on the next stages of the journey.
Dr Danielle replied
Such kind feedback - thank you! Your daughter's so lovely to work with, and we're definitely making steps in the right direction with the A Level grammar and sight translations. I'm looking forward to supporting her through the rest of the course and with her upcoming uni applications.

My daughter was struggling with GCSE Latin, especially with the literature part of the exam. With only a few lessons with Danielle, the progress my daughter is making is incredible, her literary analysis skills of Latin set texts are improving by a great amount and Danielle was also able to help her consolidate many complex grammatical forms. Her lessons are always well planned and very engaging. In addition to that, her passion, dedication and knowledge in Latin and Classics is truly inspiring and have made learning Latin a much more enjoyable journey for my daughter. She has expressed to me that she loves all her lessons with Danielle and we plan to continue studying Latin with her in the coming months. I would highly recommend her to anyone that is in need of an overall excellent teacher.
Dr Danielle replied
Thank you for your kind comments! Your daughter is working hard in our lessons and deserves full credit for her commitment and improvement on both the language and literature side. I'm looking forward to continuing our work together :)

Danielle has been incredible and comes highly recommended. Her knowledge and love of Latin are matched only by her infectious enthusiasm and energy. She is approachable, professional and collaborative in her approach. An excellent tutor, flexible around her clients needs, and with the adaptability to take on research projects (she assisted in writing a Latin motto for an ongoing petition for a grant of Arms with the College of Arms). Thank you!
Dr Danielle replied
Thanks, James! I had a lot of fun working with you on this interesting project.
