About

I am a passionate Physics and Mathematics tutor with over 17 years of teaching experience and more than 15000 hours of online lessons delivered. I completed my Ph.D in Physics at Imperial College London after obtaining both a BSc and MPhil in Physics. Throughout my academic journey, I developed a deep interest in understanding not only advanced scientific concepts, but also the most effective ways to learn and teach them.

Over the years, I have worked with students from many leading UK schools, including Eton College, St Paul's School, Westminster School, The Henrietta Barnett School, Hampton School, Lady Eleanor Holles School, Manchester Grammar School, and Godolphin and Latymer School. I have also supported international students preparing for UK qualifications such as GCSE, IGCSE, and A-level examinations.

In addition to tutoring, I have experience teaching university-level Physics and Mathematics, including topics such as electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, and advanced calculus. I also coached students for Pan-Asia Physics Olympiads, Asian Physics Olympiads, and International Physics Olympiad competitions, where students achieved multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals under my guidance.

I am also the author of A-level Mathematics mock papers and practice materials available on Amazon, designed to provide students with high-quality, challenging exam-style questions beyond standard past papers. My goal is not only to help students achieve excellent grades, but also to help them develop confidence, curiosity, and strong analytical thinking skills.

My tutoring approach is highly exam-oriented while still focusing on building strong conceptual understanding. I believe students perform best when they fully understand the logic behind concepts rather than relying purely on memorisation. I aim to simplify difficult topics into clear, structured explanations that students can apply confidently in examinations.

Lessons are carefully tailored to each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and target grades. For students who need support with fundamentals, I focus on strengthening core understanding step by step while improving confidence and exam technique. For stronger students aiming for top grades, I provide advanced problem-solving training designed to push their thinking beyond standard classroom level.

I also offer an A* Targeting Scheme for students who already find most past paper questions relatively straightforward. Under this programme, I create customised A* difficulty questions using my own unique question bank, specifically targeting weaker areas and advanced problem-solving skills. These questions are designed to reflect the style and creativity of the most challenging examination questions, helping students develop deeper analytical thinking and stronger adaptability under exam conditions.

In addition, I place strong emphasis on exam strategy, time management, and recognising common question patterns. My lessons often include carefully selected exam-style questions, structured feedback, and targeted practice to maximise improvement within a short period of time.

Outside lessons, students are welcome to contact me through WhatsApp for quick questions and support, allowing lesson time to focus more efficiently on deeper learning and exam practice. My overall aim is not only to improve grades, but also to help students become independent, confident, and intellectually curious learners.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

very good tutor my son said he explained very regarding any topic. as mum I found very expensive I wanted to book 10 lessons if there’s any discount but Dr John didn’t agree.

    Dr Jon S. replied

Dear Shifa, I am very sorry that I am not able to provide any discount. It is because I have to be fair to other students who have been paying the regular fee for months or even years. I wish you and your son all the best and a successful A-level exam for him. Thanks, Dr Jon

Jon has been tutoring my sons for 2 years now in maths and physics. They have been enjoying every session and look forward to next one every time. Jon is 100% involved in his subjects and in his students progress, always prepares the lessons and questions in advance making the boys challenge themselves. The boys had top grades in their maths and physics GCSE’s and achieved similar grades in their mock A’level’s. We couldn’t be more satisfied. I highly recommend Jon as a tutor.

    Dr Jon S. replied

Thank you very much, Amel! I will continue to try my best to help your sons to get top grades in the A-level!! Thank you!! :)

Thank you for your comments and I am glad that your daughter has enjoyed the class. It is always my passion to raise students’ interest in math/physics/chemistry so that they can find joy from learning it. It is a pity that we were not able to go on with the lessons because of the cancellation of A-Level this year. All the best to your daughter's further studies!

I had enrolled onto first tutor and selected Jon, who tutored me in Physics and Further Maths. Jon provided me with weekly sessions on my subjects with material he prepared prior to each lesson with my input. Moreover Jon taught me quick and helpful methods which enabled me to deal with the questions effectively, which is important under exam conditions. Jon had an in depth knowledge of the subjects he tutored me, which allows him to adapt his teaching for you specifically; and I felt comfortable that Jon had covered all the content required for my exams. Not only was Jon an amazing tutor he is a very pleasant person which makes the sessions more relaxed. Furthermore, Jon would always select the most difficult questions which really pushed me to a higher level in preparation for my exams.

    Dr Jon S. replied

Thank you very much, Alex. It is my pleasure to tutor you and I enjoyed every lesson with you. Although most of the questions I gave you are tough and challenging, I am impressed to see how determined you are to tackle every challenge. I wish you all the best in your study at Imperial!

I have been tutored by Jon all through my A- level, at the start of year 12 I was struggling heavily in physics and wasn't able to cope with the speed or the depth on which the subject was built. However, Jon was able to boost me up from the lowest grades to the highest within a year. His phenomenal style and method of teaching gave to the tools and ability to execute the hardest forms of questions within the A- level paper. I will certainly advise you to try his tutoring.

    Dr Jon S. replied

Thank you for your kind words. I've witnessed your remarkable improvement in the Oxford PAT preparation lessons. It's been fulfilling to see your progress, moving from a lower score to achieving the highest and securing admission to your top-choice univery. I wish you all the best in your future studies.
