👨🏫 About Me
I am a Physics and Mathematics tutor with over 15 years of teaching experience, supporting students from GCSE and IGCSE through to A-level, IB, university entrance examinations and university-level study.
After completing my BSc and MPhil in Physics, I obtained my PhD in Physics from Imperial College London.
My academic background gives me a strong understanding of advanced Physics and Mathematics, while my teaching experience has helped me develop clear and effective ways of explaining difficult concepts to students of different abilities.
I have taught students from a wide range of UK schools, including Eton College, St Paul’s School, Westminster School, The Henrietta Barnett School, Hampton School, Lady Eleanor Holles School, Manchester Grammar School, and Godolphin and Latymer School.
I have also worked extensively with international students from the UK, Hong Kong, China, Switzerland, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Thailand and other countries, helping them adapt to British examination styles and competitive university admissions.
📚 Subjects & Examinations
I teach:
• 📘 GCSE and IGCSE Mathematics and Physics
• 📗 A-level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics
• 🌍 IB Mathematics and Physics
• 🎓 University-level Physics and Mathematics
• 🎯 TMUA, ESAT, STEP and Digital SAT
• 🏛 Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial interview preparation
I teach students following all major UK examination boards as well as international qualifications.
At university level, I have taught topics including electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, classical mechanics and advanced calculus.
🏆 Recent Student Performance

Since 2019, many of my students have gained admission to Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and Russell Group universities, studying subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Economics and Computer Science.
My students have achieved a wide range of academic improvements, from progressing from predicted E grades to secure B grades, through to achieving A*, Grade 9 and successful Oxbridge admissions outcomes.
🎯 My Teaching Approach
My tutoring combines strong conceptual understanding with highly focused examination preparation.
I believe students achieve the best results when they understand why a method works, rather than relying only on memorisation.
Every lesson is tailored to the student's:
• 🎯 Current ability and target grade
• 🔍 Strengths and weaker areas
• 📚 Syllabus and examination requirements
• ⏱ Speed, accuracy and examination technique
• 🎓 Academic and university goals
For students who need support with the fundamentals, I explain difficult concepts clearly and build confidence step by step.
For stronger students targeting A*, Grade 9 or competitive university courses, I use more demanding questions to develop deeper reasoning, flexibility and independent problem-solving.
🎓A-Star Targeting Scheme
For students who already find most standard past-paper questions relatively straightforward, I offer a specialist A-Star Targeting Scheme.
The programme includes:
• Original high-difficulty questions from my own question bank
• Personalised practice targeting individual weaknesses
• Unfamiliar and multi-step problems beyond standard past papers
• Detailed feedback on reasoning, accuracy and presentation
• Regular targeted homework to maintain steady progress
The aim is not simply to give students more questions. Instead, students are challenged with carefully designed problems that develop adaptability, deeper reasoning and the ability to handle unfamiliar examination questions.
🖥 TMUA, ESAT & Digital SAT Preparation
My university entrance examination programmes combine:
• Exclusive online timed mock examinations
• Original practice papers and question sets
• Performance analysis and weakness identification
• Training in speed, accuracy and time management
• Advanced problem-solving and unfamiliar questions
• Interview-style questions where appropriate
I have developed my own online mock examination system, allowing students to practise under realistic timed conditions.
Results are used to identify patterns in:
• Timing
• Accuracy
• Topic knowledge
• Examination strategy
This allows future lessons and practice to be adjusted more precisely to each student.
For TMUA and ESAT, students may also work on longer and more demanding problems designed to develop the deeper mathematical and scientific reasoning required for university interviews and unfamiliar academic discussions.
I place particular emphasis on examination strategy, including how to manage time effectively, recognise common question structures, avoid unnecessary errors and maintain accuracy under pressure.
🥇 Physics Olympiad Experience
I have previously coached students for the:
• Pan-Asia Physics Olympiad
• Asian Physics Olympiad
• International Physics Olympiad
Students under my guidance have achieved multiple gold, silver and bronze medals.
This experience also influences the way I teach stronger students, particularly those who benefit from more challenging and unconventional Physics problems.
📖 Original Teaching Materials
I am the author of A-level Mathematics mock papers and practice materials.
I have also developed an extensive original question bank covering school examinations, A-level preparation and competitive university entrance examinations.
These materials allow students to practise with unfamiliar questions rather than relying entirely on textbook exercises and past papers they may already have seen.
📅 WPC — Weekly Progress Checks
Selected programmes include Weekly Progress Checks (WPC) to monitor students' performance between lessons.
These may include:
• Review of homework and completed work
• Identification of recurring mistakes
• Additional questions targeting weaker topics
• Adjustments to future lessons and homework
• Ongoing monitoring towards target grades
WPC helps identify problems early and keeps students progressing consistently throughout the term.
🏖 HPC — Holiday Progress Checks
Holiday Progress Checks (HPC) provide structured practice and monitoring during school holidays.
Students may receive work designed to:
• Maintain knowledge and examination skills
• Prevent learning gaps during longer breaks
• Review previously studied topics
• Prepare for upcoming school assessments
• Continue progressing towards long-term academic goals
The aim is to keep students academically active without simply giving large quantities of unfocused holiday work.
💬 Support Outside Lessons
Students are welcome to contact me through WhatsApp for short academic questions and support outside lessons.
Straightforward difficulties can therefore be resolved quickly, allowing lesson time to focus on deeper explanations, challenging problems and examination preparation.
🎓 My Aim
My aim is not only to help students achieve excellent examination results.
I also want students to become confident, independent and adaptable learners who can approach unfamiliar problems logically and understand the ideas behind the Mathematics and Physics they are studying.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

very good tutor my son said he explained very regarding any topic. as mum I found very expensive I wanted to book 10 lessons if there’s any discount but Dr John didn’t agree.
Dr Jon S. replied
Dear Shifa, I am very sorry that I am not able to provide any discount. It is because I have to be fair to other students who have been paying the regular fee for months or even years. I wish you and your son all the best and a successful A-level exam for him. Thanks, Dr Jon

Jon has been tutoring my sons for 2 years now in maths and physics. They have been enjoying every session and look forward to next one every time. Jon is 100% involved in his subjects and in his students progress, always prepares the lessons and questions in advance making the boys challenge themselves. The boys had top grades in their maths and physics GCSE’s and achieved similar grades in their mock A’level’s. We couldn’t be more satisfied. I highly recommend Jon as a tutor.

I have been tutored by Jon all through my A- level, at the start of year 12 I was struggling heavily in physics and wasn't able to cope with the speed or the depth on which the subject was built. However, Jon was able to boost me up from the lowest grades to the highest within a year. His phenomenal style and method of teaching gave to the tools and ability to execute the hardest forms of questions within the A- level paper. I will certainly advise you to try his tutoring.
Dr Jon S. replied
