About
About me
I lecture, teach, and supervise philosophy students at Cambridge University (and have done since 2017) and have several private philosophy students too. I have taught hundreds of students during my time teaching, and they (both at Cambridge and private) see huge improvements in their understanding and writing. (I have a long list of reviews and feedback evidencing this.)
My Philosophy PhD is from Cambridge University. My thesis concerned the nature of truth and is now an academic book with Palgrave Macmillan! And I studied under the hugely prestigious Bill Gates scholarship.
I also have a philosophy YouTube channel with over 15,000 subscribers and almost a million views. Besides my academic work, I am married to a wonderful Kiwi girl and have three lovely kids that keep me very busy!
My teaching method
Philosophy is primarily about a method of thinking rather than learning information. One of the first things I do is get my students to understand the positions and why the debates examined, even if centuries old, are still discussed. If a student is confident of a right answer that is usually a sign that they have not been able to fully understand the issue. Because of this, I see my task as creating a challenging but supportive environment where my students can recognise the complexity of some of the most fundamental notions we deploy to understand the world. Once the student sufficiently understands the issue, I encourage them to take a stand and argue their case. I find the quality of argument put forward in essays greatly improves with this approach, and I have consistently had excellent feedback and results.

My classes with Nathan have been a very positive experience. The sessions have given structure to the aims that I had when I started, while also helping me to explore and understand what’s missing from my foundations. I’m learning things that I wouldn’t have tackled alone (or imagined being able to enjoy to begin with!) and that feels really great. Nathan adapts the sessions depending on the work I’ve been able to do in between and they always leave me feeling excited about philosophy. It’s helping me to gain confidence exploring concepts and ideas through discussion and to “do” philosophy on the spot, and gives me the opportunity to clarify the things I’m finding most difficult. Overall, it’s been a fantastic experience!

I've been struggling with my Masters Degree and have a short deadline. After reaching out to a bunch of tutors, Nathan responded and has made me feel more confident. As a Psychology undergraduate going to a Philosophy and Psychology postgraduate the changes have been so different in the writing techniques. Nathan has already been a huge help in making me understand what I need to improve and how to achieve that. We were incredibly fortunate to find an outstanding tutor in Nathan for our daughter at a time when she was questioning her place on her degree course. Transitioning from a small school to university lecture halls with over 70 students was a huge shift. Nathan started tutoring my son A level Philosophy last year; 11 months down the line we couldn't be more delighted. I came to Nathan as a casual learner wanting to explore my interest in Philosophy. He has certainly helped me with this and now I am looking at the possibility of studying Philosophy as an A level with Nathan as my tutor.
