About

Hi. Thank you for dropping by to look at my profile. To make it easier, I have separated this bio into different sections so that you will fully understand what I can bring to your life as a student.

My Biography.

I always wanted to be a film actor following a visit to the cinema in the 1970's to see the original Star Wars. This led to beginning my actor training at stage school in my teenage years and I then went to drama school in London. During this time my love of acting on stage grew and I have worked with many of the leading theatre companies in the UK and throughout Europe. As well as acting I began teaching at drama schools in London which took me to the internationally renowned drama school called the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London where I achieved an MA and an MFA in voice studies. The voice studies courses at Central are teaching courses which look at all ways of training actors with an especial focus on voice and speech. After graduation, I worked as a voice and text specialist in many theatre companies and schools including the Shakespeare Globe Theatre Company, the National Theatre and within film and television production. I also managed to fit in a PGCE in English and Drama along the way. In 2022 I was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of Victoria College for my work with the training of actors.

Speech and Drama/Actor training.

I am enormously experienced in this area and am currently Senior Examiner for one of the major Speech and Drama Examination Boards. I have the ability to work with all age groups from grades to teaching diplomas. I teach the examinations offered by LAMDA, LCM and VCM Exams. You do not need to be studying towards exams to work with me and many students come to me to build a particular area such as voice or speech. The work is fun at the same time as being Educational. I have been Head of Voice at Rose Bruford College and for 7 years Head of Voice at the Arden School of Theatre. I am currently studying towards a doctorate with focus upon acting, voice and text.

With 30 years experience, I have a whole range of techniques which I use to help students towards the grades they are aiming for. Do not panic if grade 4 was not attained in the exams. My lessons will teach you the magic that you need to get the marks you deserve. I can get you to like these subjects. I have 100% pass rate with many students getting level 9.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Stuart is a very professional, knowledgeable and kind tutor. I am an A Level Drama and Theatre Student and have been struggling with getting the marks I want in the written essays. What I found impressive, was his ability to identify issues, and then teach me how to resolve them. For example, he identified that I was missing marks because my work was too long and as a result I was wasting time time in a very time sensitive exam and not hitting the required marks. So in the next session he taught me good drama vocabulary and techniques to summarize my work and now I feel like my work is a lot less verbose and more concise because of it. It also shows that he is an examiner, he marked my work and gave it the same exact mark as my teacher - so you can be sure that what he is teaching you is useful and applicable. What helps is how well spoken he is, his clear speech helps with understanding, and his kind character makes the lessons very enjoyable, he is clearly very optimistic about his own subject! Update: A Level Results have come out a couple days ago and I wanted to add that I rceived one of the Higest A's in my class! I really do have Stuart and his fantastic teaching to thank for the result!

My son has had 3 sessions so far and in patient way james has helped him identify areas that he can improve to assist him specifically for his resit in November. I feel my son has made more progress in these three weeks then in the last two years at school with his English. My confidence grows weekly that he will do well in the planned resit thanks to James guidance
