About
Hello! I'm Liam, a private one-to-one tutor of Physics and Maths, additionally offering Chemistry, Biology and Combined Science tuition to GCSE level. l'm also a specialist study skills tutor and mentor for students with autistic spectrum conditions (ASC) in higher education, again all on a one-to-one basis. I hold a PhD in experimental nuclear physics and an MPhys in Physics, both from the University of Liverpool.
During my University days I was heavily involved in schools outreach work, working to both develop and deliver a programme of lectures, workshops interactive events for use on campus, in schools and at science fairs. As a PhD student I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant as part of my funding contract, which saw me demonstrate in a wide range of undergraduate Physics workshops and laboratory sessions. This, together with my schools outreach work, gave me the knowledge and skills to become a private tutor. I successfully applied to become an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) towards the end of my PhD.
My work as an ASC specialist study skills tutor and mentor began a year after becoming a private tutor; whilst this is a different type of tutoring, I have found over the years that my work with ASC students in higher education greatly informs my private tutoring work and vice versa, allowing me to reflect on and develop my practice as I work.
I typically allow my lessons to be student-led, in terms of what a student decides to focus on from one lesson to another. My modus operandi, whether working on a Physics/Maths problem or supporting a student with autism, is to break a problem down into smaller steps and go through each step one by one with a student in order to better help students access the concepts, methods and processes contained within the topic being focused on. I believe this approach effectively facilitates giving students the skills and confidence to reach their full potential and reach their study goals.
