GCSE & A-Level Maths Tutor with 15+ Years’ Teaching Experience
About
About Me:
I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2010 with a first-class degree in Mathematics with honours, having previously achieved grade A in Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A level. Since graduating, I have worked full-time as a private maths tutor.
I’ve always enjoyed maths (even if I didn’t always want to admit it!), but what I particularly enjoy about tutoring is finding a way of explaining something that makes sense to the individual student. I aim to be patient, approachable and clear, and to create an atmosphere in which students feel completely comfortable stopping me, asking questions and saying when something hasn’t made sense.
More than fifteen years of feedback from students and parents has reinforced how important those qualities are, although I’m aware that there is always room to improve.
Teaching Experience:
Since leaving university, I have worked with hundreds of students across a wide range of ages and ability levels. These have included primary school students, GCSE and A-level students, and adults studying for qualifications or simply looking to improve their maths.
Much of my work is now focused on GCSE and A-level Maths, and over the years I have taught students with very different starting points and objectives: from those who lack confidence with the fundamentals through to high-attaining students aiming for the top grades.
Alongside my teaching, I have spent many years developing an extensive collection of my own resources. These include carefully sequenced lesson questions, topic worksheets, exam-style and past-paper practice, and detailed worked solutions.
Approach to Teaching:
My approach to teaching centres around patience, clarity and adapting the lesson to the individual student. One of the main advantages of one-to-one tuition is that there is no need to move on simply because the rest of a class is ready to do so. If a student needs more time on a particular idea, we can spend that time; equally, if they have understood something quickly, we can move on to more challenging material.
Where possible, I like to work through topics in a carefully structured progression, beginning with the underlying ideas and building towards the more difficult and exam-style questions. The resources I have developed over the years are particularly helpful here, as I can choose questions of an appropriate level and gradually increase the difficulty as the student progresses.
I’m also very happy to revisit topics as often as necessary. Understanding is more important than simply getting through material, and I would much rather spend additional time securing a topic properly than move on while there are still gaps.
I am also happy to push students if I feel they are capable of working at a higher level. Many students underestimate their own ability because the pace or style of their school lessons does not suit the way they learn, only to find that, once they begin one-to-one tuition, they are capable of much more than they had realised.
Finally, I strongly believe that the greatest progress usually comes when regular tuition is combined with some independent work between lessons. I am therefore happy to provide targeted practice or homework from my own resources, particularly where a student would benefit from consolidating a topic before the next lesson.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Jon is helping my son in his second year of A-Level Maths. We're only a few lessons in but he's already more positive and confident. Jon is very flexible in targeting the lessons to what my son needs to focus on and providing the level of additional homework that he is comfortable with. Jon also provides welcome feedback on progress and extra information and tips to help get the most out of lessons. I highly recommend Jon.

Jonathan is an exceptional teacher. He combines deep subject knowledge with a calm, caring, and highly organised approach that has made a real difference to my son's confidence and enjoyment of maths. My son always looked forward to his lessons with Jonathan and found them engaging, clear, and supportive. It's rare to find a tutor who is not only skilled at teaching but also genuinely invested in their student’s progress and wellbeing. We’re very grateful for everything Jonathan has done and would recommend him without hesitation.

My son found the sessions with Jon to be immensely helpful and he always came out of a session feeling things he had not completely understood at school were much clearer. His method of teaching using a whiteboard worked well online. He was enthusiastic about maths and very patient and happy to go over things until they were understood. He was happy to cover any topics my son felt difficult and going over past papers nearer the exam with clear explanations made a big difference. As a result my son feels his final grade was 1-2 higher than he would have otherwise achieved. I would wholeheartedly recommend Jonathan as a maths tutor.

My son began weekly hourly sessions with Jon a couple of months in to Year 12, when he was struggling with the jump from GCSE to A-Level Maths, and continued until the Year 13 A-level exam. We provided Jon with the school topic timetable and Jon set questions in his lessons following those topics. He was very flexible though - some weeks my son asked him to run through tricky questions he'd encountered in class/questions he'd got wrong in mock exams. Jon writes the question on screen and asks the student how to approach it. As the student explains how to answer it Jon writes this up on screen. If the students goes off-track, Jon suggests they think of a different method until the student themself finds the answer. This approach built confidence and it really helped with the final exams as many of the questions were unusual but my son was comfortable trying different approaches to get to the answer. At the end of the lesson Jon emails all the extremely clear on-screen questions/answers, which is helpful for revision, along with practice homework questions and answers on the weekly topic. I really cannot praise Jon enough. His excellent maths ability is abundantly clear, but he is also a really great teacher; he always puts the student at ease, is encouraging and patient. As a parent it was a pleasure communicating with Jon too. I was 100% happy with everything over the 2 years. With Jon's help, my son achieved an A grade in his recent A-Level, which at the start of Year 12 had seemed unachievable.

Jon is the most amazing Maths tutor. Our son just got his A level results and achieved an A in maths so he has got into his 1st choice university. Jon is professional, conscientious and excellent in every way. He breaks everything down into a simple, understandable format and goes way above and beyond sending useful links and giving advice throughout. We highly recommend him - he is just the best! Thank you so much Jon. We are so glad we found you.

I researched long and hard before choosing a tutor for my daughter for her A Level maths and ultimately I chose Jonathan as he had such positive reviews. Most cited that he had helped pupils raise well above their current grade and that's exactly what he helped my daughter achieve. She started with him at around a C grade and has just got a very high A in her results today. Jonathan is incredibly professional, friendly and reliable and my daughter enjoyed his lessons. He was always happy to give feedback to me about where she was at and was proactive at suggesting what she could do to take her learning further. We had hourly lessons with Jonathan from January and I genuinely believe he made a huge difference to the final grade. I would recommend Jonathan to anyone who needs A Level support, I felt he genuinely cared about his pupils and their results.

Amazing tutor, began working with Jon during the summer before year 13 with little confidence in my maths ability and a D predicted grade. He broke down the overwhelming amount of content in to manageable portions that he delivered at a very digestible pace. His use of an online whiteboard saved me hours of note creation. Jon was always quick with responses when I struggling with questions outside of sessions as well as being very flexible with my school timetable. Now I’ve completed my alevels and entering university with better confidence, strong study skills and a B in maths which I strongly attribute to the help he gave me! Would definitely recommend him!!!

Fabulous tutor. Really settled my daughter about her maths. She said she has never had a maths teacher able to suggest other ways to approach a question she is struggling with as well as Jonathon.

Jonathan tutored my son for 6 months prior to his final Maths A Level exams and within this timeframe demonstrated a professional, organised, caring and flexible manner. Jonathan's excellent communication meant he was able to target topics/questions that were the most valuable to my son and helped him approach the final A Level exams with much clearer knowledge and greater confidence. With Jonathan's help my son improved from a predicted low B grade to achieving a very comfortable A grade. I cannot recommend Jonathan enough!

I got in touch with Jon to provide some additional support for my son in preparation for A levels after he found some areas tricky during mocks. Jon was well organised and helped to plan and deliver the revision with examples which targeted the specific topics required. He was also helpful with general advice on exam preparation. My son was happy with the style and format of the lessons and he was pleased to achieve the B he was targeting.

My son had a difficult time preparing for maths A level due to the disruption caused by the pandemic, and the time with Jon has made a big difference to his progress. He shows far more confidence when working through questions, which will stand him in good stead for his electrical engineering course at university. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Jon!

Jonathan has tutored my daughter throughout her Maths A-level and has been instrumental in her securing a strong A* and a place on a Maths & Data Science degree at a top UK university. She initially found the transition to A-level challenging and got a C in her first Maths test. Jonathan is one the best tutors we have come across and, with his help, she quickly improved and gained confidence, consistently scoring above 90% in year 13. He is 100% committed and has very strong teaching skills. I highly recommend Jonathan and will definitely ask him to tutor her siblings! .
