GCSE Science and Maths tutor for over 10 years
About
Mostly recently I have been delivering Functional Skills Maths for a local Virtual School and before that 1:1 or small group maths and science tuition in schools. Prior to completing the PGCE I worked as a scientist in industry. I am enthusiastic about science and keen to help others develop their understanding of, and interest in, science and maths.
Teaching
I have completed a PGCE and have experience of teaching in a variety of mainstream schools, including independent schools, other educational settings and across different ability ranges. This has involved teaching KS3 and KS4 (GCSE) for the majority of the time but also some A Level Chemistry.
Within schools I have also worked with individuals and small groups. The in-school tuition started as catch-up following the pandemic but continued for the last few years and has included a number of SEND students and also some for whom English is not their first language.
Over the last 10 years I have tutored Maths and Science up to KS3 and individual Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) up to GCSE. This has been across the AQA, OCR and IGCSE Edexcel exam boards and Chemistry following Cambridge IGCSE course. GCSE maths has also been tutored, following AQA and Edexcel syllabi.
In addition I have also worked with students aiming for Common Entrance Exams at 11+ and 13+. There has also been the opportunity to work with some students being home schooled, teaching both Maths and Science, and including practical work within Science lessons.
Approach
Initially I like to find out what the student does know and the areas that are proving more challenging. We can then work to develop these weaker areas through increasing knowledge, discussion of ideas and using exam questions to check understanding and progress.
I use a range of techniques and methods when tutoring/teaching and the exact methods depend on what works best for the student. Time can be spent reviewing content covered in school or previewing new topics so the student has a basic understanding that they can build on in class. Alternatively the focus can be on exam technique, helping to understand what is expected in the answers in addition to using questions to monitor knowledge and progress.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

My son was predicted grade 3 for combined science GCSE foundation in the September of Y11. Jonathan tutored once a week at my home and was very patient and encouraged my son (who is dyslexic) and adjusted his teaching methods to ensure as much understanding as possible. My son achieved grade 5 in the exams, which was a fantastic result and fully due to Jonathan's tutoring. We cannot recommend Jonathan enough. Highly and thoroughly recommended.

Thank you so much Jonathan, we deeply appreciate you and your patience and dedication with our daughter helping her improving her science learning skills… You made it engaging and sometimes even fun. Always punctual and you showed you really care , checking always with her if it was working, repeating the concept or with another approach if needed. She really values all she has learnt with you, thank you!

My twin 15-year olds really enjoyed the first 2 sessions this week on their least favourite subjects. The acid test. "Shall i cancel these as you aren't having GCSE's this year? No way, I enjoyed it!" Thanks JL

Jonathan is an excellent tutor who applies a very flexible approach to his teaching in order that he covers what my daughter feels she needs more explanation on in preparation for her combined Science GCSE. He has also been very accommodating around the timing of his sessions. I would high recommend Jonathan as a tutor.

Jonathan was punctual and offered flexibility in session times to fit around a revision timetable and offered additional sessions as needed. His enthusiasm is clear to see, and he is able to explain complex theories in a straightforward manner. He has a great deal of patience and will try to engage with the tutee rather than just lecture facts, which ultimately builds the confidence of the tutee. I would strongly recommend Jonathan as a tutor. Whether its to secure a GCSE pass or to push for a top mark Jonathan has the skill set to help the tutee to achieve their goal.

Jonathan tutored both my daughters through GCSE Biology, Chemistry & Physics. Jonathan is very good at explaining complex topics and patient in giving examples and ensuring the concepts are properly understood. Both my daughters have done exceptionally well, achieving As in their final GCSEs. I would recommend Jonathan to any prospective tutee.

Jonathan was a very effective and focused tutor who helped take our son from a 'U' in his mock exam to an '8' in his final GCSE. We found him to be flexible and amiable.

Jonathan is an excellent tutor. He has a professional yet friendly manner and quickly established a good rapport (which was essential) with my daughter who had lost all confidence and hated science. Jonathan has an excellent knowledge of the GCSE curriculum and was able to explain scientific concepts in a simple way and make lessons fun. I found him to be patient and encouraging which really improved my daughter’s confidence, self belief & motivation. Within 6 months, with Jonathan’s support, my daughter went from 2:2 in the combined mocks to 8:7 in this summer’s GCSE combined science. I have no hesitation in recommending Jonathan as a tutor.

Jonathan tutored my daughter through her GCSE core science for 12 weeks leading up to her exams. He methodically worked through each module, to help her understand the syllabus, answer her questions and work through her revision guide. Whilst we are awaiting her results, the tutoring gave her confidence that she was better prepared and understood more content. I would recommend Jonathan, he is open to feedback and guidance on the best approach to ensure that key information is absorbed and wants to work with parents to ensure he is adding value to your child's knowledge.
