About

I’m a highly qualified professional pianist and teacher with over 10 years’ experience, currently teaching piano at Stockport Grammar School and Terra Nova School.

I hold a Master’s degree from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), where I studied with renowned pianist and pedagogue Murray McLachlan. Alongside my teaching, I maintain a busy professional performing career and work as an accompanist with the Hallé, as well as accompanying choirs, singers and instrumentalists.

I teach pupils of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to advanced pianists. Every pupil is different, so lessons are tailored to individual goals, whether working towards ABRSM examinations, preparing for performances and auditions, or simply learning and playing for enjoyment.

My pupils have an excellent record of success in graded examinations, while my teaching extends well beyond simply preparing for exams. I place particular emphasis on developing a secure technique, musical understanding, sight-reading, confidence and, most importantly, a genuine enjoyment of music.

My approach combines conservatoire-level training, over a decade of teaching experience and an active professional career with a friendly, encouraging style of teaching. I want pupils to leave lessons feeling inspired and motivated to practise, while developing the skills to become confident and independent musicians.

Whether you are looking for a teacher for your child, returning to the piano as an adult, or looking to take your playing to a more advanced level, I will tailor lessons and repertoire around your individual ambitions and musical interests.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Mackenzie was genuinely an amazing tutor, clearly has a lot of knowledge and is passionate about the art. Every lesson was a pleasure and I did really look forward to each one. Very encouraging and eager to push me out of my comfort zone to help me try new things (Although I will never sing… ever). He was extremely flexible and understanding when I had a (difficult/annoying) schedule due to work and that was really nice to have. Would highly highly recommend really amazing :)

I came to Mackenzie as an adult beginner with no experience - something that can be very daunting - and was immediately inspired and encouraged. I’ve been taught by Mackenzie for just under a year now and am so glad I picked the right tutor as I’ve come on leaps and bounds in a short space of time. Mackenzie is engaged in every lesson and has a real passion for his instrument and musicality; he expresses this in a really accessible way that isn’t patronising or elitist, and where correction is needed it’s in a constructive manner. I’ve found him to be super flexible and where needed (e.g. COVID-19!) he goes above and beyond to provide online lessons. In summary, super talented and friendly and the best value for money you will find! No matter your age or training, consider Mackenzie’s service with a 5 star rating from me.
