About
Who I am
Hi everyone! I'm a Japanese teacher in Birmingham/Sutton Coldfield, UK. I grew up in Tokyo Japan, worked in various industries in Japan and America, including international film festivals (as an organiser), research institute (as a researcher), charity organisaion for environment, and schools (as a teacher) etc. I studied social anthropology and hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology. I currently live in Birmingham UK and teach Japanese online and in classrooms (a British boarding school and Saturday Japanese school). I can help you learn from basic Japanese to GCSE, A level or travel, survival, business, or even academic level if you like! I love arts, music, reading, gardening, DIY, cooking, baking, eating, crafting, painting, soap making, knitting, traveling, walking, scuba diving, skiing, “Onsen” natural hot spring spas...and much more!
My teaching experience
I have been teaching Japanese for over 10 years for pupils at Primary school, GCSE, A level, as well as undergraduate and master’s degrees students from various universities such as London SOAS, Warwick, Sheffield, York, Durham, Cardiff university. I also taught adult tutees for their casual conversations for their holiday and work.
About the lessons
I'm a very strict teacher who would… no I'm only kidding! I am an easy-going, patient, and experienced teacher. I can help make your learning journey much easier and joyful one. I use various materials such as textbooks, online articles, original files or free flow conversations - answering any questions you come up with. I am very flexible and would love to discuss what your aim/target is when we start (first lesson is free trial). I can also tell you about Japanese culture both in traditional and modern/pop field that you might be interested in and to help you want to learn even more about Japanese language and culture in future! It's all tailor-made lessons for you :-) My background is not exactly coming from teaching, and I believe that is where my strength is as a teacher. I used to study cultural studies / social anthropology up to master’s degree in Japan. I have been always fascinated by learning and knowing different society, culture and people. I used to work as an international film festival director, interpreter/translator, environmental -social NPO worker, researcher (environment and energy) for a research institute in addition to working as a teacher. I travelled a lot before living in the UK. My wide range of experiences of living in different countries as well as working for various industries can contribute to my lessons to be more interesting and informative for you (I hope!). I have excellent communication skills, patience, passion to teach, and curiosity to learn new things.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Sato creates a positive and encouraging learning environment. I always feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Her enthusiasm for teaching is infectious, and it genuinely motivates me to keep pushing forward. It is always the highlight of my week! Beyond even learning the language, learning about the country and it's culture is so wonderful! I couldn't ask for more. Thanks to her guidance, my Japanese language skills have improved greatly. We are really happy to have Sato as my son’s Japanese tutor for his GCSE Japanese exam. She provides high quality teaching which enabled my son to reach GCSE Japanese standard and gain good grades in his final exam. She is always reliable and works on speaking, reading, Kanji practices, providing clear advice as to what my son needs to do to pass his GCSE. We are happy as the GCSE exam is now in the past!

Extremely informative with information provided and even gives cultural information when asked about. Answers any question in detail if needed and is fun and friendly at all times. Being a native speaker she also provides additional context or knowledge about things related to the current topic that a book or online reading might not even tell you about, which while not explicitly needed for learning/speaking per se, is either additional background knowledge or would be useful for conversing with native speakers. Highly recommended!

I really enjoy my lessons with Sato sensei, she's a great teacher who makes you feel comfortable and relaxed! She's very flexible which I really appreciate and is happy to study whatever you want or come up with ideas if you're not sure what you want to focus on. She is great at explaining which situations to use certain grammar in, which is something I find very useful. She also shares a lot of interesting cultural information and often creates interesting discussions. I highly recommend Sato sensei!

Sato is amazing! She’s very friendly and extremely patient. Her teaching style is perfect and lessons are adapted to fit your needs. She’s always willing to help. Whenever I’ve had any questions Sato has always taken the time to answer them, both in lessons and via email. The lessons themselves are always fun and the cultural links only make it better. As an adult learner with dyslexia reading can sometimes be a struggle, but Sato has always made me feel comfortable and offered to teach via a different method if needed. Having learnt Japanese for a while now, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt I have improved greatly since starting my lessons with Sato. The structured learning and homework makes it not just easier but more fun to learn! ありがとうございました。
