French & German GCSE & A Level tutor - 30+ years
About
You will be hard-pressed to find a more experienced or personable tutor. I am semi-retired, a former Head of Languages and Head of Sixth Form with varied examining experience. My three children are all graduate linguists and we now have bilingual grandchildren.
In 2016, I was awarded the Lidice Medal for services to the Lidice Memorial in the Czech Republic.
I pride myself on being able to find what makes learners tick, to engage them in the process and to ensure their success. In the case of children, parents are kept closely informed of progress.
My current learners are aged between 10 and 65.
My rate is £40 per hour. Believe me, it's money well-spent.

Reviews from First Tutors
Imported from Stephen S.'s First Tutors profile before the site went dark. Shown separately from Tutorperch reviews — today they don't feed this tutor's Tutorperch rating or ranking.
How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Stephen is a great tutor. Only three sessions in but Stephen has been brilliant. He is a natural and experienced teacher. He is approachable, patient and goes above and beyond in providing added value outside of tutor sessions. Thoroughly recommend. Merci beaucoup! Alex

So delighted to have found Stephen. Our daughter’s words … “He’s so lovely; has helped me understand; & has grown my confidence massively” From a place at Christmas where she wanted to drop French GCSE, to someone who now enjoys learning the language. Thank you Mr !

My son has only had one lesson so far but Stephen has been very accommodating helping him get over initial nerves and after the lesson my boy said it was really good. So can’t say fairer than that really

Stephen is an experienced educator and this shows through his professional but personal approach to tuition. He caters each session according to skill level and has clearly thought about each lesson in advance, coming prepared with exercises and teaching aids. As well as being capable he is also a charming and interesting chap, which makes the lessons not only beneficial but genuinely enjoyable. I'd highly recommend him for your lessons :)

An excellent tutor that we would recommend without hesitation. My son was struggling with his understanding of French GCSE getting Ds and Es in controlled assessments. However, Stephen has built up a great rapport with him (and us as a family) and made learning french easy to understand and enjoyable. We have yet to get the final results of my son's GCSE French exams, but we have seen an improvement in his most recent controlled assessments and mock exams obtaining As. Stephen was always prompt and reliable, a brilliant tutor!

Stephen was very prompt to respond to our request for AS level French tuition. He is providing a personalised programme of learning, identifying where help is most needed. Alongside the learning of the language, he is also providing very useful advice and practice for taking both the oral and written exams.
Stephen S. replied
1:1 is a luxury for the learner and a pleasure for the teacher!
