About
About me:
I am an experienced Biology and Maths tutor with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Genetics, a degree in Applied Biology, and A Levels in Biology and Maths. Alongside tutoring, I have several years of experience working in the scientific and medical industry, enabling me to bring real-world knowledge into every lesson!
Tutoring is my full-time profession, and with over 2,000 hours of tutoring experience and more than 80 students supported, I have extensive experience helping learners achieve their academic goals. I have worked with students of all ages and abilities, including those that benefit from additional support due to behavioural needs or learning differences such as ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia.
In addition to tutoring, I have worked as a freelance writer for DigiSchool, producing Maths and Biology revision guides for both AQA and Edexcel exam boards.
What I offer:
Biology tutoring up to A Level (AQA specialist)
Maths tutoring up to GCSE
Support for adult learners seeking a refresher or confidence boost for work or further study
School-hour lessons, ideal for home-educated students or those with free periods
In-person lessons in the Ryton area or online anywhere in the UK
One-off sessions or ongoing support to suit your needs
Excellent reviews from students and parents
Teaching style:
I understand that studying a subject that just doesn’t quite “click” can be frustrating. My lessons are friendly, relaxed, and tailored to your individual needs. I focus on building confidence, developing understanding, and improving exam technique so that students can reach their full potential.
Biology
I specialise in A Level Biology, with particular expertise in the AQA specification. Sessions are tailored to each student's goals and can focus on developing a strong understanding of topic content, improving exam technique, or a combination of both. When teaching AQA students, I ensure that both my explanations and students' answers use terminology and phrasing aligned with the specification and, most importantly, the mark scheme. This helps students build a solid understanding of the underlying biological concepts while also learning how to communicate that knowledge in the precise way examiners expect.
While the core principles of Biology are universal and I am happy to support students from any exam board, my specialist knowledge of exam technique and mark scheme requirements is strongest for AQA. Students studying other specifications are very welcome, and I can help them build a strong understanding of biological concepts. However, highly targeted exam preparation tailored to a specific specification may depend on my availability, as it requires additional lesson planning and resource development.
Maths
For Maths, sometimes it’s just one challenging topic that needs clearing up, and other times the whole subject can feel a bit much. That’s completely okay! No one is ever too young or too old to boost their confidence in Maths. I get to know how each student learns best and break concepts down into simple, easy-to-follow steps, using examples and practice questions tailored to their level. We can go at whatever pace works best, spending as much time as needed on a topic until it really clicks.

Reviews from First Tutors
Imported from Vivienne's First Tutors profile before the site went dark. Shown separately from Tutorperch reviews — today they don't feed this tutor's Tutorperch rating or ranking.
How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

We couldn't have hoped for a better maths tutor for our daughter. From the moment she met her, she was immediately put at ease. Vivienne has a very friendly and relaxed approach to learning. She's an excellent maths tutor who cares deeply about the progress made by her students. Our daughter has really struggled emotionally since she started high school, but Vivienne has made an enormous difference to her confidence and she is a lot more positive about learning now. Thanks for everything you've done so far Vivienne, we can't thank you enough.

Vivienne is a patient, reliable and knowledgable tutor who has helped my son immensely in terms of his achievement but also in terms of his enjoyment of the subject. She is very supportive but has also helped him helped him focus on how hard he needs to work.

Since starting my tutor sessions with Vivienne I now feel so much more confident and better prepared for my exam. She clearly explains each topic in a way that helps me remember it and by going through exam questions I now know how to answer questions more easily. I now have a better idea of how to effectively revise for my exam and have a much greater understanding of the topics in A Level Biology.

My son has been taking online lessons from Vivienne since August 2016. Currently taking 3 hours per week studying A Level Biology (AQA). As a parent I've found Vivienne communicates well and understands my sons needs. I think she has a good balance of knowledge and experience. My son enjoys his lessons and find that Vivienne and says that she explains things better than the text books. Her work experience in the industry not only help with the explanations but also make them more interesting and relevant. He is a slow learner but she is patient and provides him with encouragement and direction. I don't know how we would have managed with out her. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Vivienne as a tutor to anyone.

My daughter has only had 2 lessons with Vivienne so far and I cannot believe the difference. She has explained everything in a way that my daughter has grasped and now instead of dreading her A level biology exams feels that she is in control. My husband and I have been astounded at the complete change in my daughter. Would recommend Vivienne to anyone. My only misfortune is that we did not find her earlier.

Vivienne has been a brilliant tutor from day 1 - My daughter is 15 and is doing GCSE maths. Vivienne has been paitent, explains things in a number of ways and Hannah has improved substantially since her first session in November. She is very easy going and easy to approach. She is a fantastic tutor and I would highly recommend her to anyone. Wendy

Viv is a great tutor. I had totally lost my confidence in maths and she has been so patient and understanding. Slowly my confidence is beginning to build. Very professional and supportive. I would fully recommend her to any one.

Your weekly lessons are proving invaluable and it's fantastic to see my son's confidence and abilities grow. You've given him hope in what appeared to be a hopeless situation. We are both so glad we found you!
