About
I am a tutor based in Bristol specializing in teaching Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I have a PhD in Optoelectronics as well as a masters degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Southampton. Working in a world leading research group in a highly competitive field has given me a great deal of insight into not just the topics I teach but also how they are applied in the real world.
I have strong communication skills with a wide variety of audiences: I have presented my doctoral research at multiple international conferences, taught undergraduate students and conducted outreach events in primary schools. I have also been very involved with theatre both on-stage and off, including taking a critically acclaimed show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe - the largest performance art festival in the world. I hope these examples demonstrate some of the passion I have for my work which I absolutely take into my teaching and tutoring.
Experience
I have worked as a private tutor for almost 3 years in which time I have taught over 70 students in Maths, Physics, Further Maths and Electrical Engineering at GCSE, A-Level and university level. I typically work with my students in the months leading up to their final exams and most of my students have attained grades one or two levels above their predicted or mock results after working with me; this includes achieving the highest grades (8/9 or A/A*) but also raising failing students to a passing grade. I have also worked with several students over multiple years, supporting them as they learn the topics and making sure they have a strong foundation and ultimately the best chance of excelling in their exams.
Prior to working as a private tutor, I have 4 years of experience teaching undergraduate students in subjects such as Maths, Physics, Electronics and Computer Science as well as more general concepts such as problem solving, note-keeping and communication skills. Most of my time was spent with students who found the content challenging but I also helped high-achievers. My experience covers 1-on-1 teaching as well as small and large groups both online and in-person.
Approach to Tutoring
I will always begin by discussing a student's individual requirements and any areas of the syllabus they would like to focus on. In my experience, however, a robust understanding of the concepts of science and engineering topics combined with problem solving skills will equip a student to answer any exam question and instill the confidence to overcome stressful exam conditions and provide the groundwork to progress further in any area they wish. My attitude is that if a student doesn't understand a concept then I need to explain it in a different way. I am patient and will always emphasize providing a student with the tools to find the answers for themselves rather than have them memorize meaningless information.
A Note on Pricing
The main reason I work as a tutor is that I want to help people but I am aware that the rates I advertise are unaffordable for many of the people who would benefit most from a private tutor. Therefore I do offer reduced rates to anyone who would struggle to pay the full amount; please do ask about this when you get in touch.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

William has been helping my son with further maths and physics before his A levels. My son says that William knows the subjects in great depth, and been able to assist and explain clearly the most complicated topics. We are very pleased to have found William, and cannot recommend him highly enough.

Having time with William has helped me explore aspects of electronics I previously didn’t know of. He went far above what I was expecting by putting so much time and effort into ensuring our lesson ran smoothly, and I learnt in a way that I found beneficial. He’s clearly an extremely passionate individual towards the topics he teaches, and has a strong commitment towards guaranteeing quality education.

William has been fantastic! He has been helping my daughter with her A-level maths for over a year. He has been extremely postive and enthusiastic and has really helped with my daughter's confidence in tackling tough maths problems. Each session has been tailored to her needs and she has only had good things to say about Williams' teaching style and ability to explain concepts that she has had difficulty with. I can't recommend him highly enough. I wish we had found him earlier, so that my son could also have benefitted from his tuition!

William helped teach both iGCSE Maths and Physics to high level Italian students. The feedback from the students was excellent. William helped explain the subject matter very clearly and found ways to make it 'click' for even the most nervous student. He made the lessons interesting, interactive and fun. William is very reliable, professional and flexible, and is a pleasure to work with. I can't recommend him highly enough.

William tutors me in A-level maths and physics twice a week. He is extremely patient when I don't understand something, very understanding when it comes to rescheduling, and is very flexible. Despite the agreed-upon time being one hour, he will often go up to 1.5 or even 2 hours if I request it. Additionally, he will send reminders on the day of the lesson. He is very knowledgeable and will always provide very coherent explanations. Within the lesson time, he can easily switch between topics in maths and physics without any hesitation. When I first started working with him, I was very far behind in A-level maths and receiving very low grades. With his help, I was able to rapidly catch up and am now receiving significantly higher grades. Aside from being an exceptional tutor, he is also a wonderful person, and I thoroughly enjoy working with him. I would highly recommend him!
