Cello lessons and teachers

Cello tuition runs through ABRSM (dominant) and Trinity Classical, with LCME a credible alternative. ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory prereq applies to Practical and Performance Grades 6-8 the same as for other instruments. Fractional sizes (1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 4/4) are needed through roughly age 14 depending on physical growth, typically rented until full size. Cello sees lower starting numbers than violin but better retention into Grade 6+, which is why teachers often recommend it for parents asking about long-term commitment. Tutoring helps most with left-hand position shifts (Grade 3-4), with thumb position (Grade 5+), and with bow distribution and sound production at slower tempos where intonation is more exposed. Ensemble culture is heavy. Most cellists are in a school orchestra or chamber group by Grade 4, which adds practice pressure parents should anticipate. Transport (full-size cello plus bow case) is a practical consideration most parents underestimate.
