IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the dominant English-proficiency test for UK university admission, immigration and many professional registrations, available in Academic and General Training versions. It has four sections (listening, reading, writing, speaking) with the 9-band scale and specific score requirements per institution or visa route. Tutoring helps most with writing (Task 1 data description and Task 2 essay both reward specific structure and language) and with speaking technique under interview conditions. Most students take 1-3 Advanced Highers alongside extra Highers or other study. Coursework (particularly the extended project/dissertation in many subjects) carries substantial weight.
