Higher IELTS prep tutors

1 UK tutor who teach IELTS prep at Higher.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the dominant English-proficiency test for UK university admission, immigration and many professional registrations, available in Academic and General Training versions. It has four sections (listening, reading, writing, speaking) with the 9-band scale and specific score requirements per institution or visa route. Tutoring helps most with writing (Task 1 data description and Task 2 essay both reward specific structure and language) and with speaking technique under interview conditions. Look for tutors with IELTS examiner experience or explicit, recent preparation track record. The band-descriptor specifics matter and generalist English tutors often miss them.

Scottish Higher is the standard Scottish sixth-year qualification, sat in S5 (age 16-17), and is the main route into Scottish university applications (which run on a different cycle from English UCAS). Most students take five Highers in S5, with strong applicants sitting another year of Advanced Highers in S6. The qualification is administered by Qualifications Scotland (formerly the SQA, renamed February 2026), with coursework and examination components. Tutoring helps most with subject content, with the coursework write-ups, and with exam-paper technique under SQA mark schemes. Match the tutor to SQA experience specifically. Higher is not interchangeable with A-level, despite frequently being compared.
