Recorder tuition is distinct from the school-recorder image many parents carry. Serious graded recorder runs through ABRSM and Trinity Classical and uses the full family (descant, treble, tenor, bass), with treble becoming the default instrument from Grade 4+. Period-instrument tradition is strong; baroque repertoire dominates the syllabus at higher grades. Typical starting age is five to seven on descant via Whole Class Ensemble Tuition in many primaries, with treble entry around Grade 3-4. Tutoring helps most with transitioning from descant to treble (different fingering system, C versus F), with baroque articulation and period style from Grade 4+, and with the multi-recorder requirements at the higher grades. Grade 6+ recorder is a credible UCAS-tariff-bearing classical pathway with a serious specialist teacher pool, especially in early-music circles.
