TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an ETS-administered English proficiency test used by some UK universities and, more commonly, by US universities and global institutions. It's now primarily delivered as TOEFL iBT, with reading, listening, speaking and writing sections, scored out of 120. Tutoring helps most with the integrated writing and speaking tasks (which combine listening, reading and producing, a format unfamiliar to most students), and with the academic reading-passage technique. Scottish Higher is the standard Scottish sixth-year qualification, sat in S5 (age 16-17), and is the main route into Scottish university applications (which run on a different cycle from English UCAS). Most students take five Highers in S5, with strong applicants sitting another year of Advanced Highers in S6. The qualification is administered by the SQA (now Qualifications Scotland), with coursework and examination components.
