Typical starting age is five to seven (small finger span, child-scaled instrument), and it's now common as the first instrument in UK primary schools via Whole Class Ensemble Tuition (often replacing recorder in WCET programmes). Tutoring helps most with chord-change fluency in the early grades, with transitioning to fingerpicking from Grade 3+, and with reading TAB alongside standard notation. For many learners, ukulele is a feeder instrument to guitar around age 10-12, worth flagging at intake. Tutors should ask about prior WCET exposure rather than assume blank slate, since many primary-school children arrive with basic chord knowledge already.
