The Wirral 11+ in plain English

Wirral's six state grammars all admit through a single GL Assessment-based 11+ test, sat in mid-September of Year 6. Standard GL paper format: multiple-choice on separate answer sheets across English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Application logistics run through Wirral Council's admissions service.

A single test result is shared across all the grammars an applicant lists. Each grammar then applies its own oversubscription criteria: proximity, sibling priority, and (for the Catholic grammars) faith priority.

The six Wirral grammars

Wirral Grammar School for Boys and Wirral Grammar School for Girls (both Bebington) are non-faith and less heavily over-subscribed in most years than the West Kirby pair. Calday Grange Grammar School (West Kirby, boys) is typically the most over-subscribed boys' grammar in the borough, with a strong academic reputation and large catchment area. West Kirby Grammar School (girls) is paired conceptually with Calday though independent, with similar over-subscription pressure. St Anselm's College (Birkenhead, boys, Catholic) admits with faith-priority oversubscription rules layered on top of the 11+ score, and Upton Hall School FCJ (Upton, girls, Catholic) uses the same model.

Paper format

Standard GL Assessment papers, multiple-choice across four components. English is comprehension and language conventions. Maths covers KS2 arithmetic, problem-solving, ratio, and geometry. Verbal Reasoning uses cloze, antonyms, codes, and analogies. Non-Verbal Reasoning covers sequences, rotations, and mirror images. Children record answers on separate multiple-choice answer sheets; handwriting isn't a factor; speed and accuracy are.

Typical prep arc

A 12-month prep schedule works for most Wirral candidates. The first three months (early Year 5) focus on KS2 foundation review: times tables fluent, written methods automated, age-appropriate reading speed. Months 4-9 cover topic-specific GL practice: VR types one at a time, NVR patterns, Maths problem-solving, and English comprehension. Build accuracy before pushing speed. Months 10-12 are timed mock papers, drilling the multiple-choice answer sheet format and exam-day pacing.

Once-a-week tutoring with consistent home practice in between is typical. Heavier coaching loads are more relevant where the target is Calday Grange or West Kirby and a strongly-above-threshold score matters.

Choosing a Wirral 11+ tutor

Ask candidate tutors how many Wirral 11+ candidates they've prepped in the last two years and which Wirral grammars their students have gone on to. Find out whether they cover all four GL components or specialise, and whether they offer online tutoring (often more practical given the borough's geographic spread).

Wirral has plenty of competent generic 11+ tutors, but tutors with specifically Wirral experience know the over-subscription patterns at Calday and West Kirby and can pace prep to the score thresholds your target grammar realistically requires.

Common questions

  • How does the Wirral 11+ work? +

The Wirral 11+ is a single GL Assessment-based test sat in mid-September of Year 6, with the result shared across the borough's grammar schools. Children sit it once and apply to whichever grammars they want using the same score, subject to each school's own oversubscription criteria.

  • Which grammars are in Wirral? +

Six state grammars in two pairs: Wirral Grammar School for Boys / Wirral Grammar School for Girls (Bebington), West Kirby Grammar School for Girls / Calday Grange Grammar School for Boys (West Kirby), and the Catholic pair St Anselm's College (boys, Birkenhead) / Upton Hall School FCJ (girls, Upton). The Catholic schools have additional faith-based oversubscription criteria.

  • How over-subscribed are Wirral grammars? +

Variably. Calday Grange and West Kirby Grammar are typically the most over-subscribed, often with score thresholds well above the standard pass mark for guaranteed entry. Wirral Boys and Wirral Girls are less heavily over-subscribed in most years. The Catholic grammars apply faith-priority before score, which makes their pure-merit threshold harder to predict.

  • Is online tutoring common in Wirral? +

Increasingly yes. Wirral is a relatively compact area but in-person 11+ tutors aren't evenly distributed; most are clustered around Bebington, Heswall, and West Kirby. Online tutoring opens up tutors based across Merseyside and beyond, which is particularly useful for Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning practice (the components most suited to whiteboard-based online tutoring).

  • When should we start preparing? +

Most Wirral families start formal prep in early Year 5, about 12 months before the test. Light tutoring (an hour a week) plus structured home practice is sufficient for most academically able children. Heavier prep is more useful where you're targeting Calday Grange or West Kirby and need a strongly-above-threshold score.
