LCM music exams

LCM (London College of Music Examinations, accredited through the University of West London) is the smaller of the four major UK music exam boards. Most students follow ABRSM, Trinity, or Rockschool, but LCM is a strong choice for classical guitar, popular music, drama and communication exams, or where a teacher specifically prefers it.

What LCM offers

LCM publishes graded syllabuses across classical instrumental and vocal (piano, strings, guitar including classical guitar, woodwind, brass, and voice); popular music (guitar, bass, drums, vocals, keys; an alternative to Rockschool and Trinity Rock & Pop); speech, drama, and communication (graded speech-and-drama exams, public-speaking exams, communication-skills awards); and Theory of Music (graded theory exams, encouraged but not strictly required for higher practical grades).

Where LCM specifically shines

Classical guitar

Some classical-guitar teachers prefer LCM's syllabus repertoire and exam structure for classical guitar over ABRSM's or Trinity's. LCM has built a reputation in classical guitar pedagogy that's smaller in scale but well-regarded among specialists.

Speech, drama, and communication

LCM's drama exams sit alongside LAMDA and Trinity drama exams as well-regarded options. Public-speaking and communication exams suit students working on presentation skills alongside or instead of pure performance.

Popular-music alternative

LCM's popular-music syllabus is a third option alongside Rockschool (RSL) and Trinity Rock & Pop. Less widely-used than either but a real option, particularly for students whose teacher prefers LCM's repertoire choices.

When LCM makes sense

Three cases stand out. The strongest is when your child's teacher uses LCM: most music teachers stay on the board they know, and switching mid-route adds friction. The second is classical guitar with a teacher who specifically prefers LCM repertoire. The third is drama, speech, or communication grading, where LAMDA, Trinity, and LCM all offer credible options and the choice often comes down to teacher preference.

UCAS tariff and university recognition

LCM Grades 6, 7, 8 carry UCAS tariff points equivalent to ABRSM and Trinity. Diploma-level qualifications (DipLCM, ALCM Associate, LLCM Licentiate, FLCM Fellowship) carry higher tariffs. Music conservatoires assess actual playing rather than weighting one board over another for admissions decisions.

Choosing an LCM tutor

LCM-specific experience matters more than for ABRSM or Trinity: the smaller pool of LCM-trained teachers means active LCM teaching experience is a meaningful filter. Confirm the discipline (classical instrumental, popular music, or speech and drama), since different teachers specialise. For classical guitar specifically, look for tutors who actively champion LCM's classical-guitar syllabus rather than treating it as a fallback.

Common questions

  • What's distinctive about LCM? +

Several smaller-but-notable strengths. (1) Classical guitar: some classical-guitar teachers specifically prefer LCM's repertoire choices and exam structure. (2) Popular-music exams: LCM has its own popular-music syllabus alongside Rockschool and Trinity Rock & Pop. (3) Speech, drama, and communication exams: LCM is known for graded speech-and-drama exams alongside LAMDA and Trinity. (4) Distinct flexibility in exam structure: some grade exams offer a choice between solo or accompanied performance.

  • Why is LCM less common than ABRSM and Trinity? +

Heritage and brand. ABRSM and Trinity are older and have built deeper teacher and examiner networks. Most music teachers in the UK trained primarily on ABRSM or Trinity routes and continue with what they know. LCM is the natural choice when a particular teacher specifically prefers LCM repertoire (notably classical guitar) or where a school has institutional ties to LCM. For most students choosing between music exam boards, LCM isn't usually the default; it's an active choice to suit a specific teacher or repertoire preference.

  • How does LCM grade tutoring work? +

Specialist tutors who teach LCM tend to know the syllabus repertoire well and have institutional familiarity with LCM exam conventions. The exam structure follows the standard pattern (prepared pieces, technical exercises, supporting tests like sight-reading and aural) but with LCM's specific repertoire and conventions. Students preparing for LCM exams should specifically work with tutors who teach LCM rather than generic music tutors.

  • How do LCM grades convert to UCAS? +

LCM Grades 6, 7, 8 carry UCAS tariff points alongside ABRSM, Trinity, and Rockschool. Diploma-level qualifications (DipLCM, ALCM, LLCM, FLCM) carry higher tariffs. Recognition by music conservatoires is on a par with the larger boards; admissions tutors at conservatoires assess the candidate's actual playing rather than weighting one board over another.

  • When does LCM make sense? +

Three common cases. (1) Your child's teacher specifically uses LCM. Most music teachers stay on the board they know, so if your tutor prefers LCM, follow that. (2) Classical guitar: LCM's classical guitar syllabus is preferred by some specialists. (3) Drama or speech-and-communication grades: LCM has well-regarded exams in these areas alongside LAMDA. Outside these specific cases, ABRSM, Trinity, or Rockschool are usually the more obvious defaults.
