About

Expert Online A-Level and GCSE Economics Tutor | Qualified Teacher | Examiner | 20+ Years' Experience

I am a fully qualified teacher, experienced examiner and full-time online Economics tutor, with a degree in Economics from Liverpool University. Based in Bristol, I now tutor students almost entirely online across the UK and internationally. I have over 20 years' teaching experience and have delivered almost 12,000 hours of one-to-one tuition to over 400 students.

I help GCSE, A-Level, IB and international Economics and Business Studies students improve their understanding, confidence and exam performance. Many students come to me because they are underperforming, struggling with exam technique, or finding it difficult to turn their knowledge into high-scoring answers.

With the right support, students can make significant progress. Many of my students improve by one, two or even three grades. In 2025, the majority of my A-Level students achieved grades A* to B, with many exceeding their school predictions.

How I Help Students Improve

Many students understand more Economics than their exam answers show. My role is to help them close that gap.

In lessons, we work on the areas that make the biggest difference to marks, including:

  • Understanding difficult topics clearly

  • Planning and structuring exam answers

  • Improving analysis and evaluation

  • Using diagrams accurately

  • Applying theory to case studies and data

  • Bringing in relevant real-world examples

  • Practising past paper questions

I place a strong emphasis on exam technique because this is often where students lose marks. I guide students through the process of building clear, well-structured answers so they know exactly what examiners are looking for.

Students also benefit from access to my own resources, including model A and A* answers, detailed essay plans and past paper materials.

Online Lessons

Almost all of my tuition is now online. Lessons take place through Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, using shared documents so that we can work through questions, plans and feedback together in real time.

Online tuition works extremely well for Economics because it allows lessons to be focused, interactive and flexible. I have taught students across the UK and internationally, including students in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Recent Student Progress

Recent examples of student progress include:

  • E grade to A*

  • E grade to B

  • U grade to C

  • C/D grades to A

The exact outcome depends on the student, the time available and the work completed between lessons, but my focus is always on helping each student make the strongest possible progress from their starting point.

What Families Say

“My son initially struggled with the subject gaining an E grade in his mock exams but with Ian's help he managed a grade B in his AS level and attained an A grade in his A Level.”

“Matt only got an E grade in his February A Level mock exam and the school predicted he would get a C grade. With the significant assistance from Ian, Matt achieved an A* at A Level.”

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Ian is a brilliant tutor and one of the best tutors we’ve used. He managed to get my daughter from a fail to grade C in a very short period of time. I didn’t think that much progress was possible as my daughter was really struggling and lost interest in the subject. Now it’s given my daughter the confidence to push herself more in this subject. From a parents point of view Ian was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Very reliable and understanding and gave me regular detailed feedback on my daughter’s progress. This was comforting to me as a parent and took some stress off me as I felt my daughter was in good hands from the beginning.

Ian has been an incredible tutor. With his investment and organisation, we managed to complete the entire A Level Economics Edexcel (A) course from scratch in just eight months! lan was always prompt, reliable, and his passion and depth of knowledge in economics truly translated into his teaching. He explained complex concepts in a way that was clear and engaging, and always made sure I fully understood before moving on. Our lessons focused on past papers and exam-style questions, which proved invaluable in developing both my confidence and my exam technique. Ian also provided extensive detailed notes to help me develop my understanding. I can't recommend lan highly enough. Without his support, I wouldn't have been able to achieve what I did in such a short time, and I've also developed a genuine appreciation and interest for the subject thanks to him.

We would highly recommend Ian as a tutor for A-level economics. He started tutoring my son last September as my son was struggling with this subject, while doing well in his other 2 A-level subjects. Ian was patient, reliable and helpful, providing great insight into how to tackle the syllabus. Ian was very supportive and adapted his style of tutoring to help my son’s understanding. Despite getting Cs and Ds frequently in class tests, my son achieved an A grade in his A-levell.

Ian helped me to achieve my A in Economics recently. Without his tutoring it would not have been possible. He is an absolutely, brilliant tutor and I am truly grateful for all his encouragement and support.
