About
I am Maths Teacher and tutor located in Dorking Surrey with over 25 years of teaching experience currently working full time in an award wining secondary school in Surrey. Prior to my current position I taught Maths GCSE and A-level at a leading independent school in Greater London for over 10 years. I have also tutored for over 20 years. I really enjoy helping students learn and see the rapid increase in progress and confidence that can be achieved from one-to-one tuition.
As a current teacher, crucially, I am familiar with all the changes to the syllabus for both GCSE and A-level and have the relevant materials to assist. The content has increased for both as has the type of questions. In order to prepare my students fully I ensure they have as much exposure to the problem solving style of questions in the new specification. It is hard for them to get enough of this in school time with the extra content they have to cover so this is where tutoring can be very beneficial.
I also teach and tutor younger secondary school pupils. I am always mindful of the ultimate GCSE they are gong to teach and tailor the work according to whether their school offers the GCSE or IGCSE maths exam. I can also tutor the AQA level 2 certificate in further maths.
I use my knowledge of examination board mark schemes to ensure that students present their answers in such a way as to maximise their mark. I have an excellent track record of results including one of my Year 11 classes achieving a 90% A* rate at GCSE.
In addition to my extensive mainstream experience have a specialism in teaching maths to SEN students with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia.
I can tutor online, at my house in Dorking or sometimes in the pupil's house (depending on the location - there will be an extra charge for travelling) prices shown are for in person at my house or online. I have lots of experience in online tuition and have bought the equipment to make it fully effective. Tuition can be weekdays after school or evening though I do have some limited weekend slots if preferred (also during school holidays if required). I am very punctual and reliable. I can provide materials such as past exam papers or topic specific worksheets as required. My approach is to get the student to think things out for themselves and enable them to gain confidence as they realise that they can answer questions successfully . I encourage students to tell me if, after an explanation, they still are not sure, so that I can try to explain it in a different way. My SEN experience has helped me develop multiple strategies to teach the more abstract concepts that students can sometimes struggle with.
Feedback / references from recent tutees :
"Thank you for supporting Alex over the last few months with his maths. He felt very confident with his recent statistics paper, which is encouraging. His confidence in maths has definitely grown over the last few months and he is busy revising for Y13 finals with a positive approach."
Reference from previous A-level + GCSE tutee :"Andrew has been tutoring my son, Michael, for approximately 2 years . Andrew's input has been very helpful to Michael. Andrew is always pleasant and punctual. I would recommend Andrew as a maths tutor "
Michael went on to achieve an A at GCSE and I continued tutoring him for A-level.
Darcey wrote "Just wanted to send you a quick email to let you know that I achieved an A* in maths!!! Thank you so much for all your help over the past year I could not have done it without you. "

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

My daughter is comfortable with his coaching style which is always a good start. She is extremely pleased that she is now ahead of her topics and is bracing her lessons with more confidence. We’ve had two lessons with Andrew and are looking at remaining under his tutelage till her ‘A’ levels.

Andy has been a patient and conscientious tutor for my daughter over the past six months and has given her more confidence and improved her grade. He has also been flexible in his approach when needing to change evenings/timings. I would recommend him to anyone.

Having chosen to use additional tutoring to assist my children at various points during their education I understand how challenging it is to find an appropriate tutor for your child’s requirements. I was recommended FirstTutors and settled on Andy after a few email exchanges. I’m so glad I did. Andy’s ability to adapt to an individual child’s abilities and needs is remarkable. In my daughter's case, who is 15, and approaching her GCSE’s she had lost confidence, was struggling with most (aspects/topics) of maths and was failing to grasp exam technique. Andy very quickly built a working relationship with my daughter and developed an approach which suited my daughter's abilities. As a result her confidence has completely returned, her understanding of the Maths (aspects/topics) has been amazing to watch and incredibly Andy has taught her to enjoy the subject of Maths. I have every confidence my daughter will achieve very high exam results because of the tutoring she has received, for which I thank Andy entirely. Finally, having been let down in the past I’d like to mention what a pleasure it is to work with a professional teacher who understands the importance of arrangements made and time keeping. If you’re looking to better every aspect of your child’s Maths skills and put a smile on their face at the same time I would recommend him.

Andy's calm and considered approach to his subject area meant that he quickly gained our confidence and trust. He engaged easily with our daughter, answering her questions and allowing her to determine the areas that they would focus on each week. He has built up her confidence and focused her on what she needs to learn for the exams. Andy is reliable, punctual and more importantly committed. He's an excellent tutor.

Andy is always courteous and on time. He has used a defined plan for tutoring my daughter to ensure that he covers all parts of the syllabus she has studied so far. This is extremely helpful and allows her to consolidate and revise so that she can come up to the required standard.

Very pleased with Andrew, my son seems to work well with him and we have seen an improvement in his maths work. His end of year school maths exam result was good.We hope to continue to have Andrew in the new school term as we believe he has been a great help.
