About

About Me
I am an experienced and dedicated English teacher, currently working as Lead Practitioner of English at a secondary school in Watford. I bring over ten years of classroom and leadership experience. I am deeply passionate about teaching and committed to helping students develop a genuine love of literature and language. My expertise lies in raising attainment through high-quality teaching, thoughtful curriculum design, and targeted support. Prior to teaching, I was responsible for training, coaching and developing adult literacy in a contact centre.

Approach
My approach centres on nurture and support, carefully adapted to meet the needs of each student in order to build confidence and improve academic outcomes. I create and provide tailored resources for every session, adapting my teaching to suit individual learners and offering detailed feedback on written work. My practice is underpinned by high expectations, inclusive teaching, and a strong understanding of how students learn best. I aim to deliver engaging, knowledge-rich lessons that develop confidence in reading, writing, and critical thinking. My approach is flexible; dealing with students who are struggling with English or stretching students who are gifted and talented. I tutor on a 1:1 basis and prefer to deliver hour long sessions. I am happy to deliver longer sessions over the school holidays, if required.

Teaching Experience
In my current role, I lead on teaching and learning across the English department. I work closely with colleagues through coaching, modelling effective practice, and delivering professional development. I have a proven track record of improving student outcomes across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5, with a particular focus on closing attainment gaps and supporting disadvantaged learners to reach their full potential. I also collaborate with senior leadership to drive coaching initiatives and promote consistency in teaching standards across the school. In 2025, I was proud to achieve the NPQLT (National Professional Qualification for Leading Teaching). I am committed to ongoing professional development and regularly engage with current educational research to ensure my practice remains reflective, informed, and impactful.

Availability
I currently have availability for two new students on Tuesdays and Thursdays following the completion of my Year 11 cohort. Sessions can take place online via Microsoft Teams or in the student’s home, with a parent or carer present.

Charging and Cancellation
I offer tutoring on weekday evenings and during school holidays. Sessions scheduled after 6pm or at weekends incur an additional charge of £10. A 50% fee applies to cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, and the full fee is charged for missed sessions without notice.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Julia is an excellent English tutor. I couldn't recommend her higher. She's thorough, always prepared, patient and kind. She's made a great impression on us, helped my son's progress already and we couldn't be happier for working with her.

    Julia replied

Thank you for your positive feedback. Your son should be really proud of the hard work he’s putting in and it’s a real pleasure to see him thrive.

My daughter needed some help after a surprising Year 10 exam result! Julia started by helping her to organise herself and then tailored her revision over the course of Year 11, while supporting what she was covering at school. My daughter quickly gained her confidence and achieved two grades higher for her Year 11 mocks and predicted grades! She’s just sat her GCSEs and felt confident using the strategies she’d learnt with Julia. I’d thoroughly recommend Julia, she was very easy to communicate with, always punctual and great at feedback.

Julia is so patient, kind and nurturing and her lessons are so informative. She has already in a few weeks increased my daughters confidence and knowledge along with improving her grade. My daughter has anxiety but is really comfortable and Julia is getting her engaged in her learning. I would truly recommend Julia.

Julia really helped my daughter with her English GCSE revision. She was very friendly and approachable and at the same time focused and thorough. My daughter felt she benefited hugely from seeing Julia and feels much more confident about her up coming exams. I recommend her highly, I just wish we had found her sooner.
