Tutoring approach

Assessing different learning styles and individual levels of motivation allows me to structure my approach. I am able to provide most of the resources but like to include key texts etc. that the student has available. Each tutoring assignment is tailored to the individual with emphasis on knowledge, writing skills, essay structure, employing scaffolding templates to improve focus, skills and outcome. I prepare detailed slides prior to tutorials so that we can work through the relevant information together.
I am flexible in my approach to tutoring and will adjust the focus to cover specific concepts and theory as requested by the client.
Engaging a tutor is often a difficult decision and many students find it difficult to make an ongoing commitment to a regular schedule. Flexibility can be discussed, subject to capacity limitation and, generally, notice by email, 24 hours in advance has proven successful.

Terms

1.Rates are based on an academic hour (60 minutes). In some cases, shorter or longer sessions may be recommended.
2.The first session is free and is an opportunity to find out more about the type of tuition, the course and the resources that are available. It provides an ‘ice breaker’ so that tuition can be an enjoyable as well as an effective experience.
3.Further bookings are made with a prepayment covering 4 sessions (4 x 60 minutes) over a four week period, thus ensuring continuity and preferential availability.
Please note - Where tuition is part of a homeschool programme, the recommended number of taught hours set by the exam board should be considered at the outset.
4.Tuition fees are paid before the first session of the cycle. Free cancellations apply 24 hours before each session. During high-demand periods e.g. May/June exam session, one week (7 days) notice is required.

Imported from Catherine's First Tutors profile before the site went dark. Shown separately from Tutorperch reviews — today they don't feed this tutor's Tutorperch rating or ranking.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Good but time zone mismatch and tailored to exam focused syllabus.

    Catherine replied

Positive feedback is always welcome; unsure why 60 min time difference is an impediment. Best wishes for the future.

Catherine is a very helpful and insightful History tutor who helped elevate my historical knowledge to a sufficient degree for my IGCSE CIE History exam, Option B, First World War depth study. She is extremely punctual, personal, approachable, and accessible, with her lessons being both informative and entertaining with a plethora of well-crafted resources. Highly recommend, Mrs Lau and Angelika

Lessons started well with Catherine. She created several tailor-made resources for my son. However, after a few lessons, she said she needed some medical treatment and was postponing the remainder of the classes that we had paid for; we were not offered a refund. Catherine said she would create resources, but the date for the recommencement of classes was pushed back twice, and none of the work my son submitted was marked. We engaged a tutor to accelerate my son's progress in history, so I decided to cut my losses and find another tutor.

    Catherine replied

Based on our ongoing discussions, I was committed to tutoring Nicola's son upon return from hospital. I find it peculiar, therefore, that Nicola expected me to "offer" a refund. It is also astounding that this derogatory comment was posted a few days before tuition was about to recommence. It signifies a breach of trust. Resources were created for Nicola's son without cost to herself, and further free resources were offered during the period in question. As for "needing some medical treatment" it is not appropriate to discuss with tutees serious medical surgery, or for Nicola to refer to it, and in such a contentious manner, here on First Tutors. Fortunately, other parents have been much more understanding !

My daughter had only the introductory session and she is very pleased and looking forward to learning more. It’s too early to make any comment or give feedback, however, Catherine response promptly to all messages and was flexible in readjusting the time. She started with addressing the objectives, process, and outcomes of these sessions. The first lesson was free as mentioned on the website.

Catherine has been great helping me with my A level Politics (edexcel) particularly with marking essays she sets each week and the notes that she sends me. She was very flexible in finding a time slot to suite me, is always on time and emails me the things we are going to cover before the lessons. Her knowledge of the subject is broad and up to date, However I have found that some of the examples she uses require quite a lot of historical background knowledge that I don't have. We have had a few technical hitches with using [contact details hidden — unlock to view] but I seems to be working all right now. I think that with the extra support from Catherine I should be capable of achieving the top grades.
