About

Personal Description:

I am a fully qualified retired English teacher with a passion for stories in almost any genre, in almost any form. I have nearly thirty years teaching experience and have taught in secondary, further and higher education establishments. I enjoy reading and writing and going to the theatre. I also love the great outdoors, and when I'm not teaching I like to go camping with my dog, Nancy. I love new ideas, knowledge, all animals, science-fiction, sunshine and travelling.

Tutoring Experience:

I have an excellent track record of helping students make exceptional progress and achieve outstanding results. For the past twelve years, I have worked as a private tutor, supporting students of all ages and abilities. Most of my GCSE students make significant progress, typically improving by two or three grades, with many achieving even greater gains. I have also helped students with dyslexia achieve grades 6 and above at GCSE, home-educated students gain grades 7 and above in their GCSEs and IGCSEs, and A-level students secure A and A* grades in both English Language and English Literature. Whatever a student's starting point, my aim is always to build confidence, develop skills and help them achieve their full potential.

Tutoring Approach:

I am patient, supportive, approachable and believe strongly in the value of a good rapport between tutor and tutee. I am very good at quickly identifying specific weaknesses and areas for improvement which, in conjunction with an in-depth knowledge of the KS3, KS4 and KS5 syllabi, often produces significant and rapid improvement. I believe very strongly that teaching and learning should be creative and active and not be about the passive absorption of facts. I take a keen interest in current educational ideas and the processes of the mind, and endeavour to incorporate an understanding of how we learn into everything I do.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Fliss was a great tutor and really supported my son in the year running up to his GCSE’s. Fliss was patient and provided the encouragement that my son needed to achieve great results. Would highly recommend Fliss as a tutor.

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you, Liz. I'm so pleased for him. It's great to see all the hard work pay off.

I would totally recommend Felicity for tutoring. My daughter was finding English GCSE literature/language extremely hard. Felicity helped her break things down, new techniques for answering exam questions and did this in a relaxed and positive way. My daughter went on to get a grade higher in her exams than she was expected to achieve. Felicity has a fantastic knowledge of her subject and is able to use this to help others.

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you, Katie. She worked really hard and it paid off! No more Jekyll and Hyde or Macbeth - ever!! All the very best in the future.

Felicity is an excellent English teacher. She helped prepare my son for his IGCSE English papers 2023 (Edexcel board). My son felt confident and feels he has done really well. Once we receive his grades will add to this feedback. Felicity is kind and patient and very knowledgeable on the subject. I would recommend Felicity to anyone who is looking for extra help in English Language and Literature.

    Felicity K. replied

Hello Ramla, Thank you for your kind review. Helping your son has been a pleasure. I'm very much looking forward to hearing about his results in August. Best wishes, Fliss

We are delighted with the high level of professionalism and detail in the tutoring which Felicity provides, in an environment which positivity encourages engagement and learning. She is clearly very knowledgable and experienced with the exam board requirements and through the lessons our daughter had with Felicity - sadly cut short by the Coronavirus - her grades improved from Level 6 to Level 9 in her mock exams which is testament to the results-driven guidance provide by Felicity . We would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Felicity and wish her every success for the future.

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you, Gosia. I've really enjoyed teaching Emily. She has such a positive, proactive approach to study! It's such a shame she's being denied the chance to show off her skills, especially her prosody. Please let me know how she gets on. Best wishes, Fliss

My 16 year old son was struggling with English as he lacked confidence. However, Fliss listened to him and took the time to understand exactly what he found difficult. She concentrated on the areas he needed help with and we were very happy with the improvement she helped him to achieve. He became much more confident in his understanding of what was needed and his teachers all noticed this improvement which was reflected in his grades. In his mocks he was given a 3/4 but with the tuition his predicted grade increased to a 7.

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you, Jane. I'm so pleased with Joel's progress. He's worked so hard and come on so much. Excellent determination and focus! Can't wait to see him on the big screen!

Felicity is a very supportive and dedicated teacher. My Son took GCSE triple Sciences and Maths but needed support with English Literature and Language. He scored 8 in Language and we were very happy having found Felicity early on. My son was out of school due to underlining health issues for quite some time and depended on Felicity to catch up with school work. We will definitely recommend her to one looking for support with the subject.

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you, Subrata. He's a very bright student. Excellent understanding of the writer's craft. I hope he's getting on alright at college. All the best, Fliss

Felicity was passionate, enthusiastic and very helpful. She was fantastic for my daughter whilst studying for her English Language and Literature GCSE Exams. Floss engaged my daughter; vastly increasing her knowledge, not only in the subject matter but also in what each paper was looking for. We loved having her at the house and can’t thank her enough for all her help. I would not hesitate to recommend her.

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you so much, Isabelle. I loved coming to you! I sometimes work in Guildford now and think of you when I'm passing. All the best, Fliss

Our daughter finds interactions with teachers at school to be stressful and she was struggling with various aspects in her English lessons. She found it difficult to get the help she needed to understand the subject from her school. We found Felicity about 8 months ago and have engaged her services on a regular basis since then. Our daughter enjoys her lessons with Felicity and finds her help and advice to be very supportive. Consequently her ability and self confidence in the subject has grown during a very important phase of her education. Felicity is an excellent tutor and I highly recommend her.

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you, Rick. She's doing so well and possesses so many strengths! Just a bit of encouragement needed. Have a lovely Easter! Best wishes, Fliss

My son achieved a 5 in English Literature and a 4 in English Language which we are all delighted with, my son especially. This achievement is mostly down to the additional support and tutoring that he received from Felicity. I can thoroughly recommend Felicity to anyone seeking tutoring in English Literature and English Language.

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you, Amanda! I'm so pleased he did it. He put in a praiseworthy and dedicated effort and thoroughly deserves his English-free further education experience!

Fliss has been an absolutely brilliant tutor during the run up to my A Level Literature exam, she helped me to improve my exam technique to access the higher marks and developed my confidence with the subject. Fliss enabled me to achieve an A in English Literature, which was the grade that my university applications required. I am so grateful for all of Fliss’ help, I will miss our weekly sessions and I would highly recommend her

    Felicity K. replied

Thank you, Laila. I too will miss our sessions. I especially loved all the Coleridge. In fact, so inspired was I that I went off to the West Country to walk a bit of the Coleridge Way! Have a great time at Warwick!
