About

I am a very experienced and enthusiastic teacher of English, with many years additional expertise examining GCSE and A level English. I mark GCSE Language and GCSE Literature public exams, and I am a moderator for A level Lang/Lit coursework. I believe that everyone can enjoy studying English, and make good progress, even if there are some barriers to learning. I have extensive experience teaching students with SEND. I am also proficient in supporting students with EAL who are preparing for English as a first language exams.

I am well qualified, with a degree in English Literature, a PGCE in Secondary English, and a Masters Degree in English Literature. For over 30 years I have pursued a career in teaching English Literature and Language in senior schools, and for the Open University. I have been a Head of English in an outstanding 11-18 school, teaching GCSEs, A levels and the International Baccalaureate. I have also worked for the examination board OCR as Curriculum Leader for English, where I designed and authored English qualifications and assessment materials.

I have been a successful private tutor with First Tutors, an agency which has now closed. I am keen to continue tutoring as I am passionate about my subject and really enjoy teaching. My approach is student-centered; I can confidently assess your current level of knowledge and skills, and provide the support needed to make excellent progress. I have in-depth knowledge of the English curriculum and assessments, so can tailor my teaching to your particular needs. I create high-quality materials, ensuring my lessons are stimulating and informative, and I will give detailed and constructive feedback on your written work. My aim is always to make my lessons clearly focused, well-prepared and engaging.

I am very experienced teaching online, using Teams or Google Meet, and I am also happy to meet for lessons if you are local.
