Hi! I'm Chris, a private tutor offering specialist tuition in GCSE and A-Level Maths and Further Maths, with 10 years of professional experience working as a statistician for a major UK company and a first-class degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Warwick.

My approach to teaching

I believe that the reason so many people struggle with maths isn't because it's fundamentally hard, but a result of how it's often presented to them - in a maths lesson, you're often presented with random formulae and weird theorems that come out of nowhere and left to work through exercises from a textbook. It's no wonder so many people hate maths.

In my maths sessions, you won't find any of that. Here's an outline of a typical session:

• You'll be introduced to the topic, and learn why we would want to study it so you see the purpose of the maths.

• I won't just present you with facts to learn - we'll derive them step-by-step from facts you already know, so you'll see exactly where all the formulae and theorems you need to know come from and appreciate that they aren't just random facts.

• I'll talk you through some example questions for the topic, showing you my approach and thought process, so you can adopt the same approach in your exams.

• Then it's your turn to try some questions. We'll go though your answers together afterwards, so if you have made mistakes, you'll see where they are and why they're mistakes, so that you improve at maths as you do it.

My aim is to give you a new perspective on the maths we cover that you might not have seen in school/college before, and to get you to leave the session feeling like you truly understand the maths we've covered - because you actually do.

In between sessions, I'll give you practice exercises to have a go at to consolidate your learning. It's important that you do these to the best of your ability - ultimately, there is only one way to get good at maths, and that is to do maths, and lots of it.

All of the example questions we cover in our sessions, as well as the practice exercises you'll be given, will be based on actual exam questions, so as well as developing a deep understanding of the maths, you'll naturally get used to answering exam questions and develop your 'exam technique'. That way, I'm confident that when it comes to exam day, you'll walk into the exam hall full of confidence and come out after the exam knowing that you smashed it.

I offer both individual and group sessions (max. group size 5 students). Teaching can take place online, or for those based in and around the Milton Keynes area, at your home.
