About me

Hello there, I'm Jason, a Cambridge-educated private tutor with over 14 years' experience, including: preparing students for admission to elite UK independent schools like Eton, Westminster, St Paul's, Winchester, and others; Oxbridge entry; and general academic support and confidence boosting in English and Latin – from pre-GCSE to GCSE to A level.

As well as having a degree in English from the University of Cambridge, I studied Latin language and literature up to undergraduate level too, continuing my classical studies as a module within my degree.

For all new families, I offer a free 15-minute introductory consultation. This is an opportunity for me to meet you and your child, answer your questions, and discuss their academic goals, upcoming exam targets, and specific needs. Should you wish to proceed, it also means we can come up with a clear plan.

When I'm not teaching, I work as a professional actor and writer for television, film, radio, stage, video games, and cartoons, with a particular interest in comedy. My students often enjoy my use of comic, absurd or dramatic examples as a means of invigorating potentially dry topics.

ADMISSIONS AND ENTRANCE TRAINING

— Oxbridge admissions (English): written work, close reading, and interview preparation.

— 13+ Entry & Pre-Tests: Comprehensive preparation for the competitive written entrance exams in English and Latin, and for the Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning components of the ISEB Common Pre-Test and UKiset.

— Common Entrance: English and Latin for the 13+ Common Entrance and scholarship papers.

— Junior & Senior School Admissions: English, literacy, and reasoning preparation from 10+ to 11+, and 16+.

GENERAL ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND CONFIDENCE BOOSTING

— Pre-GCSE to GCSE & A level: English Literature and/or Language, and Latin Language and Literature across all exam boards.

— Undergraduate Mentoring: Advanced guidance in English, and Latin Language and Literature for university students.

My approach

I'm very patient and attentive in my approach to teaching, always adapting my lessons to suit the needs of each student. This customisation extends to my teaching materials, which I always adjust to help iron out any specific gaps I identify in a particular student. Moreover, my commitment to your progress doesn't end when the lesson stops. I'm always happy to answer questions or review tricky homework problems between our sessions.

I'm deeply passionate about my subjects, which I believe to be important because – in my experience – enthusiasm is contagious. In one memorable example, I had a student who hated Latin so much that, having failed her mock, she simply wanted to get through her GCSE exam as soon as possible so that she could finally drop the subject afterwards. At the end of our time together, she became so enthused that she not only took it up for A level, but also went on to win a conditional offer to study Classics at Cambridge. She achieved her grades, completed her bachelor's, and has since even finished her master's. Needless to say, I'm very proud!
