About
I have 30 years teaching experience as a college lecturer. I began tutoring 15 years ago. I am familiar with the National 5 syllabus as well as the Higher English Tutors. I have also tutored for GCSE and A Level English. I have received many positive reviews from parents which underpins my competencies. I have a thorough knowledge of the syllabus’s, examination content and literature to be studied. I can also offer essay writing techniques and critical analysis techniques.
I operate online which has proven to be highly successful. Students seem to prefer online rather than face to face tutoring and results have shown this. I also offer tutoring in tutees home within a 3 mile radius of my postcode.
When I first ‘meet’ my Tutee, I like to have an informal chat to find out areas of strength as well as areas needing improvement. I am happy to have parents involved in this discussion. All areas of the syllabus are covered with parental input welcomed. I also offer examination preparation, study techniques and time management.
I like to build a working relationship with my Tutee and encourage confidence building. This in turn can lead to improved test results in class and ultimately improved examination grades.
I can also work with tutees with dyslexia having tutored a number of individuals who had previously struggled with learning.

Sheila has been providing A-Level English lit tutoring for my daughter for several months now. My daughter has found her helpful and patient when explaining the meanings of the set reading. Her class grades are steadily improving and she enjoys and looks forward to her sessions with Sheila. Sheila works with my daughter to explain examination technique and what answer style is expected in the exam. I would not hesitate to recommend Sheila as an English lit tutor. She is patient, identifies the students weaknesses and shows them how to overcome them.

Sheila has been tutoring my son for a few weeks now. He is in year 11 and had just been identified as having slow processing. Hi relationship with English was rock bottom, he hated writing and reading and had a very poor opinion of himself. He is now able to write a short story within an hour, which he is proud of. I can clearly see he is more engaged and he talks about how he can make his writing better. Sheila has quickly developed a great relationship with him and is helping him transform how he feels about himself. We highly recommend Shiela.

Sheila has in the past three weeks proved herself an excellent teacher. My 16yr old daughter requested an English tutor as she knows she is not achieving the grades she would like to get and knows she is capable of. I relayed this to Sheila and also told her that my daughter used to do a lot of creative writing throughout her childhood but stopped around the age of 13-14, and that I would love to see her find her inspiration for English again, not just improve her grades. In only her second session Sheila had encouraged her to write a short story despite being in the middle of mocks. She has since been able to give her feedback which my daughter has listened to rather than just get disheartened as she does when I try to give feedback. I appreciate this is only early days but so far I’m very glad to see some energy/ direction injected into my daughter at such a crucial stage of her learning.

We are very happy, my son has received a high B in his English Language GCSE, thanks to Sheila and his hard work. We engaged Shelia just after Easter, at that time my son was receiving C and D's, to work with him on line. I listened in to the first session and found Shelia amazing. She focussed on him and why he was getting these results, why he lacked motivation and a positive mindset. Within no time, she had him engaged and willing to work hard to do his best. I only wish we had found her earlier as I am positive that he would have had an A and that it would have helped in other subjects. I have no hesitation to recommend Shelia, she is exceptional. My daughter achieved an A in her Nat 5 English exam. However in her fifth year at school her teacher, who happened to be head of the department,undermined her confidence in her own ability. This teacher who is near retirement age chose to study Burns and Shakespeare rather than any of the contemporary writers. Obviously this was her own comfort zone and allowed no consideration for her pupils preference. Her notes on these materials were inadequate and I felt that my daughter would benefit from a tutors influence. Sheila reassured my daughter that her investigative work obtained via the internet had helped point her in the right direction. She evaluated my daughters work very quickly and assisted in areas to be addressed, which was sadly lacking in the school environment. My daughters efforts and Sheila's influence resulted in my daughter achieving an A Higher English pass result at 91%.
