English Language, Literature, and History tutor and examiner
About
I am an experienced and professional Private Tutor who teaches in the South of England. I have degrees in English Literature and History; I specialise in all the humanities subjects: English Literature, English Language, History, Religious Studies, Politics, and Psychology. I have been running my own private tuition and teaching business for over a decade, and consequently, have helped thousands of students improve their grades and achieve their academic goals.
For the last five years, I have been working as a GCSE and iGCSE examiner for Eduqas/WJEC, OCR, and Cambridge International (CIE) exam boards, this acts as a continuous training to be familiar and proficient with the assessment objectives and mark schemes in order to deliver high-quality and effecting lessons to my students.
I cover/teach content from all of the major exam boards: AQA, Edexcel/Pearson, WJEC/Eduqas, OCR, and CIE. Throughout my decade of tutoring, I have taught material from Key Stage 1 all the way up to A Level and Degree material.
In addition, I teach specialist preparation classes for 11+, 13+, and King's Scholarship exams, as well as international students iGCSE and S.A.Ts.
SEN experience: I have taught many students with a variety of educational needs, ranging from dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, ADD, ADHD, slow processing issues to various learning challenges and have found a way to always engage them in the sessions and keep them interested in the subject and help them achieve their goals.
I have a passion for teaching; I love interacting with students and seeing them develop their skills, expand their knowledge, and realise their potential. I try to immediately establish a strong rapport with my students, and I aim to ensure that my sessions are very engaging and interactive. Typically, my students improve by at least 3 grades after a year with me, although there have been some higher and more impressive leaps in grades.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Matt is a professional and personable tutor, able to relate well to the younger generation. His additional knowledge and experience as an examiner has improved my son's predicted English Language GCSE grade in just a few sessions. I would highly recommend him to other parents.

Matt built up a great rapport with my son very quickly. Within a few weeks there was a marked improvement in writing confidence. Now after 4 months tutoring in both English and History, my son has improved both his analytical skills and critical thinking, and is feeling in a much better place for Alevel exams this summer.

My daughter has been working with Matt for almost six months, and the progress she has made during this time has been very encouraging. Matt is consistently punctual, approachable, and professional, and he always takes the time to provide clear and useful feedback after each session. His support has strengthened her subject knowledge and built confidence in her abilities. We are extremely pleased with the impact he has had on her learning and would highly recommend him to other students and parents. Thank you, Matt.

Matt is an excellent English tutor. He has been working with my son for the past 8 months as he is approaching his GCSE exams this summer. Matt is patient, calm and engaging and my son really enjoys his weekly sessions. I can see a huge difference with my son since these sessions started - both in exam results but more importantly his confidence has grown in the subject area which is all down to Matt. Highly recommended

Matt has been a real lifesaver for my son’s GCSE English Literature grade. It was initially predicted to be a 5. He had tutored him weekly (one hour) for five to six months and my son has scored an impressive 8 in both GCSE English and English Literature! My son is always raving about Matt’s deep knowledge of the subject, his understanding of the exam board, and his ability to make learning fun and engaging; he really admires him. Despite his busy schedules, Matt always puts the academic needs of GCSE students first and identifies areas where my son can improve. I can’t recommend Matthew enough as an exceptional tutor. Thanks so much Matt. We are so thrilled!

Matt tutored our son for GCSE English for the 3 months leading up to the exams. The main focus was on the Language papers at our request given the short timescales. Matt was knowledgable about the different papers and examination boards and what student needed to do to score well. Matt worked on helping our son to improve his exam technique which significantly increased his confidence and meant he felt much more prepared. Matt provided feedback in a constructive, personalised and positive way that was really helpful. I would highly recommend him as a tutor for GCSE English.

Matt was working with our son to prepare for the GCSEs (both English and history). Our son found the format of the online lessons very engaging. The sessions boosted his confidence leading up to his exams. I can highly recommend Matt as a great teacher with an approach that is tailored to the student's needs.

My son made huge progress with his English GCSE, Matt made the subject accessible, was very knowledgeable about how to achieve the best results in the time we had and used humour to keep a very reluctant learner engaged. Matt tutored him for both English and history - would definitely recommend.

Matt has tutored our daughter for the last 6 months, in the run up to her GCSE'S… what can i say? He has been brilliant. Our daughters confidence and her written work in both english language and english literature have increased enormously. The suuport he has offered in the run up the exams with mocks, additional sessions and on line as well as face to face tutoring has been brilliant. Matt has been fantastic, i cant recommend him highly enough, just great. A lovely guy too!

Matt is helping my daughter with A' level history. His lessons make the vast content clear and engaging and he is very good at going back to basics where she is unsure. He has also helped her to make amazing, simple format revision resources which she says are easy to learn from and build on. Matt has not only focused on the content but has also helped with her exam technique. Since she has started tuition with Matt her confidence in the subject has really grown.

Matt has worked hard to engage my reluctant fourteen year old son (KS4) and can teach his school GCSE texts. He differentiates his style for my daughter who is KS3 and pitches the sessions to suit their individual needs. They both genuinely enjoy the sessions with Matt and I can already see improvements.

Matt has been working with my 9 year old for nearly a year. Matt has given him confidence with his writing and now moving on to help with phonic and spellings. My son is very anxious and Matt has worked with him to create a great space for him to learn. Highly recommend by me but more importantly by my 9 year old. Thank you Matt

Very professional and clearly cares about helping students achieve and understand their subject matter. Communication is great. Matt was very quick to grasp where my daughters strengths and weaknesses are and work with that. Would definitely recommend. I am confident Matts efforts will result in an improved GCSE result for my daughter.

Matt responded promptly to our initial enquiry and was just able to squeeze us into his schedule. He is obviously a sought after tutor! He clearly had an excellent grasp of syllabus and quickly worked out what our son (with additional needs) what he needed to work on. We didn't continue lessons as we found someone with more regular availability, but first impressions were good. (My son was less keen on Matt's penchant for gothic literature, but that's probably not a deal breaker for most people! )
