About
Welcome,
I've been teaching for 15+ years and performing for even longer! My approach to teaching is to take all the lessons I learn from performing / practising and condense it down to serve the goals of my students. I aim to put myself out of the job by teaching you how to teach yourself! I perform in a function band several times a week and enjoy passing on all the knowledge and experience I gain from this!
I teach:
Guitar - to all levels - including Electric (rock/pop), Jazz, Classical etc.
Bass Guitar - up to grade 8
Music Theory - all levels.
Lute - all levels.
Throughout my years of experience I have taught all age ranges - from 4 to 84! Over half my students have been Autistic/ADHD/Nurodivegent - this has given me a calm and patient manner as I appreciate all learning styles! Please get in touch if you have any questions about this.
I approach every student as a unique case and tailor the learning to suit them - I don't specifically follow any curriculum unless you request it - I'm experienced with Rock School, ABRSM and Trinity.

Rick has been great thus far. Rick is patient, receptive to questions, and is able to speed up or slow down based on your progress and effort. I've only been learning properly for a few weeks, but progress is very good.

Guitar for GCSE music . If I could give a rating of 6/5 or 7 or 8 or more I would. It just wasn't working for our daughter learning guitar at school. Rick you have been so affirming,encouraging and flexible in your approach that her enjoyment and confidence playing guitar are both well and truly restored.She had begun to feel she was just rubbish at reading music but you found specific strategies to help and she's regained her confidence .She came bouncing into the room after yesterdays lesson full of delight because you managed to find a way of explaining 'circle of fifths' to her by trying different ways of explaining until you found the one which made the penny drop for her.Thank you for all your help.

Rick is an excellent guitar tutor. He has a love for music and is really good at teaching others what he already knows so well. He balances theory and playing so that one reinforces the other. I asked Rick to help my 18 year old son to obtain his grade 5 theory in a 6 month crash course. Though Charlie is gifted musically he had little interest in the theoretical side of things ! Rick was able to make the learning fun, often using the guitar as an aid memoire and Charlie actually started to enjoy the logic behind the making of music. Time keeping was excellent and homework was set when requested. Rick is a talented and interesting musician and we both wish him luck with his career. Jane Poyser

Yeah, Rick is a great teacher and I'm learning fast. I am 4 lessons in and its all going very well. I should have got lessons years ago. Makes for significantly faster learning!! Last night i played the theme tune to Star Wars through without a mistake. Nice! I can highly recommend Rick. Nice guy and knows his stuff too.

Rick is a great tutor! He is very patient and explains all the finer details to learning to play a guitar. I have had a couple of tutors and Rick was the only one that explained why we play things a certain way and suggests good methods for remembering certain techniques.
