Bass guitar lessons and teachers

Bass guitar in UK tuition runs primarily through RSL Awards / Rockschool, with Trinity Rock & Pop and LCME credible alternatives; ABRSM has a newer Electric Bass entry but Rockschool remains dominant. It's a materially different instrument from double bass or orchestral bass: separate teacher pool, separate technique, different notation conventions. Typical starting age is nine or ten for the scale length and finger stretch, with short-scale basses available for younger starters but uncommon in tuition. The grade ladder runs Debut through Grades 1-8 to Diploma at RSL, with Initial to Grade 8 at Trinity Rock & Pop. Tutoring helps most with reading bass-clef notation (often a gap when students arrive from tab-only learning), with groove and pocket feel from Grade 3+, with slap and fingerstyle as the techniques diverge at higher grades, and with ear training for transcription. Many bass tutors double as guitar tutors, but the inverse isn't reliable. Parents should ask about bass-specific teaching experience rather than assume guitar credentials transfer.
