About

Over 20 years of experience as a tutor, working with children of all abilities and ages.

My career has been interesting and varied, and across the age ranges and ability levels.

From examination paper marking and preparation at GCSE to Reading Recovery, I can help your child to improve their confidence and understanding of maths and English.

I have successfully prepared pupils to pass entrance examinations for selective schools such as St Joseph’s Catholic College, Habberdashers’ Adams, Newport Girls’ School, Manchester Grammar School and Clifton College.

Effective, friendly and professional! I'm married, with children and have a great sense of humour and bags of patience. I teach in schools and colleges, both as a class teacher and working with children with specific needs.

TUTORING EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching in schools for many years and started tutoring when the head teacher asked me if I'd help coach his friend's daughter to get into St Joseph's. It all started from there, with those friends of his passing me onto their friends and neighbours. My work has taken me into High Schools, Special Schools and grammar schools, teaching those with specific need and the gifted and talented who need stretching. I also mark Key Stage Two tests and GCSE English papers - which help to inform my teaching. I've had specific training for EAL work and Reading Recovery, which means that pupils who struggle with English and reading can be assured that they will make good progress. I also work with high ability pupils who aren't getting the input they need in class.

TUTORING APPROACH

I make lessons interesting and informative; I try to improve children's ability and their confidence; and help them to feel good about themselves and their abilities. After discussions with you and your child , I will give a simple assessment activity and then work on improving areas of weakness. Each lesson is individually tailored to your child's unique needs, homework with invariably be given and a short debrief at the end of the session so that you will know what has been covered and how you may be able to support your child's learning. Blocks of 10 pre-paid lessons start at the advertised price. Pay-on-the-night sessions are a little more expensive. Cancellation charges do apply, as all lessons are one-to-one. Please ask for further details.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Great communication, understanding, very helpful, my daughter feels like learned more in an hr with susan than what she does at school. Would highly recommend.

Susan is a fantastic tutor to my daughter. My daughter is weeks away from conducting her GCSE's and has stuggled with her confidence in Maths for a while. Susan has started to give her the confidence needed and I have seen a vast improvement in her school work (School teachers have commented also). I wish that I had found Susan earlier (before my daughters PPE's) to ensure that her predicted grades reflected her actual ability. I would recommend Susan to everyone, professional, likeable and experienced.

Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. Your daughter is incredibly capable, and has a fantastic work ethic. She deserves to do really well, both in terms of her GCSEs and her future career. Thank you so much for the lovely feedback.

James really enjoys his weekly lessons with Sue. Since having lessons James has started to grow in both his ability and self confidence. Sue is honest with any feedback and provides additional support when required. We would highly recommend Sue to anyone considering additional tuition.

My two lovely sons have special needs and both specifically struggle with their reading and writing. Susan got the measure if their strengths and weaknesses immediately. She is very engaging and the boys love to go. She praises their efforts and stretches their brains;they both leave feeling pleased with themselves. It's nice to see them feeling like they have succeeded. Susan is clearly very experienced and it's obvious she really cares. I really recommend Susan.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Your boys are absolutely delightful. They have such a lovely attitude to life and work! You’ve done an amazing job. I’ll treasure what J said for a long time! Thank you so much for your kind words.

My son has now had 2 sessions with Susan. Her bubbly personality settled my son down straight away, after he was reluctant to go initially. She gives constant praise for the good stuff he does, and that makes him engaged for the session. I'm pleased with the sessions so far and Hopefully we will see some progress with his English comprehension over the forthcoming weeks and months.

Thank you very much for your feedback. He's a lovely boy and a pleasure to work with.
