About
Who am I?
I’m a qualified, highly experienced and successful teacher of KS3, GCSE, A Level, IBAC, Oxbridge students and adult learners. Based in Darlington with many local tutees, I also have online students from schools across Britain and in British schools in Europe. I have vast experience at all levels and with all abilities and was an A level examiner for many years. I tutor because watching students' confidence grow is the best feeling in the world.
Fully qualified: Department for Education number 92/36276
Fully vetted: DBS Enhanced Certificate number 001698348531
Highest standards of professionalism: The Tutors’ Association membership number 54731965
Teaching and tutoring experience
Highly experienced: Oxford University graduate with many years' experience of classroom teaching and tutoring students of all ages and abilities
I have 26 years' teaching experience in settings including a state grammar, a successful comprehensive, a highly selective independent school and, for the last fourteen years of my classroom career, in one of the most successful and inclusive sixth form colleges in the UK. As well as knowing the state and independent schools in my local area very well, I have built up a steady stream of word of mouth referrals in a variety of schools nationwide and in Europe. Since 2020 I have provided a busy online tutoring service that is consistently oversubscribed.
My approach to tutoring
Everything I do is centred on the needs of the individual student. Tutoring gives me the luxury of getting to know them, the way they learn and the challenges they face, very quickly. I push students hard but in a way that minimises their anxiety. I'm flexible, friendly and responsive. My priority is to build a relaxed rapport with each tutee and to encourage them to keep reflecting on what's working and what we need to adapt. Often stress about results, or nervousness about thinking for themselves, is holding them back at school. Tutoring gives them the chance to start enjoying the subject and to become the independent thinkers that success in English requires.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Cressida has helped my daughter focus on her weaker areas of A level English Literature and this has greatly helped her understanding. The resources she has shared have been very useful too.
Cressida T. replied
That's good to hear Jennie. I know I've only had a few sessions with your daughter so far, but she has lots of potential and I'm looking forward to seeing her confidence develop.

Cressida is phenomenal. She is engaging and patient. Cressida created a positive and encouraging learning environment that truly boosted our Year 11's confidence. Her lesson plans were clear and tackled his concerns, so he developed skills with his GCSEs in mind. We couldn't be happier and are incredibly grateful for Cressida's support.
Cressida T. replied
That's good to hear - but I expect you know that he is the most engaged student and it's been a pleasure to harness that enthusiasm. I believe that if students relax and enjoy their sessions they can learn so much more.

Ms is a very capable and highly knowledgeable tutor. She is always very well on time and well prepared, with plenty of information to give each lesson. My son makes a great progress for GCSE English and English literature with her help. She does not only teach the knowledge, but also teach my son analysis and technique. During GCSE exam, my son can uses the analysis and technique to give the answers for some difficult questions. He got 9 in English literature, almost 100% correct rate). She also teaches my son IBDP English literature B. My son got 6/7 for his mock Exam. Ms is a top tutor. My son is lucky to have chance to follow her lesson. Huge thanks! I would highly recommend her!

Cressida is an amazing tutor. She has a lovely manner and tone and is so well organised. Her teaching experience and knowledge are obvious during her sessions. My grandaughter is in Year 10 and really likes her sessions and is engaged and interested. I am hoping to have Cressida tutor her until after her English GCSES in 2026. I highly recommend Cressida. 16 Jun 2024 Our daughter achieve a remarkable grade 9 in her GCSE exams. We are immensely grateful for the outstanding tutoring you provided. Your ability to simplify complex topics and motivate her through challenging content was truly invaluable. We highly recommend your services to any student aiming for success. Thank you for your exceptional guidance and support. 27 Jan 2021 We greatly appreciate Cressida’s friendly and encouraging attitude. English is not our daughter’s favourite subject, but Cressida has a way of engaging her fully in the lesson. We are also impressed with the learning resources Cressida uses for the lessons.
Cressida T. replied
Ganesh, the best thing about tutoring your daughter has been to see her blossom as we follow her interests. She is responding so well to African American literature, and when young people get enthusiastic about what they are reading it makes all the difference.

My Son has just finished his GCSEs in English Language and Literature and said Cress was an excellent teacher in both subjects. He found her lessons well structured, fun and informative. She gave constructive and focused feedback which helped him to greatly improve his skills in English, as well as teaching him techniques which has helped him to score top marks in essays and analysis. He really looked forward to her lessons which was a credit to Cress's teaching style. Cress was methodical in working through past paper questions and exam techniques ahead of the final exams so that my son felt prepared to face his GCSE exams. We felt Cress was a very experienced teacher who helped my son gain confidence in the subject and aim for a top grade. I would highly recommend Cress- she is an excellent tutor!
Cressida T. replied
That's so good to know Tina. We're having fun with Dickens' and Shakespeare's difficult language by doing dramatic, over the top readings together. He's really starting to relish all the long words! It's so good to watch a year 8 student's confidence increase so quickly and to know he will be in a a strong position at the start of his GCSE course.

After searching for a tutor we found Cress to help my daughter who is retaking English Language GCSE this November. Three sessions later my daughter (who is dyslexic and struggled throughout school) said, ‘she is one of the most understanding teachers I have ever had and at last I have a plan on how to tackle creative writing which I find so difficult.’ Following her last session Cress has rekindled her enthusiasm and she now has hope for the retake. The sessions are on line and initially we were both reluctant to try this. However, they work really well and are easy to set up . She is an excellent teacher, I thoroughly recommend her.
Cressida T. replied
Thank you so much Carolyn. It's always very rewarding for me when the strategies I give a student boost their confidence so rapidly. Vicky's good at sharing with me what's working and where she's getting stuck, which is very helpful. She's making really good progress and is a delight to tutor.

Cressida, thoughtful, extremely professional, and very kind teacher. We just started our path and it has been perfect so far. Through her standout empathy and knowledge, everything seems much easier, Cressida makes you feel very comfortable when learning with her. All lessons are tailored to my needs, I really appreciate their meticulous and personalised structure, also as an adult from abroad living in the UK for just three years, I finally found a person who is able to understand which are the right steps for me to take while achieving my personal and professional goals. Cress, thank you very much for your effort and your patience! Giorgio
Cressida T. replied

Cressida is a wonderful tutor. Her passion for reading and writing is so infectious. In a short amount of time has made a huge impact on my daughter who enjoys every session she attends with Cressida. She is warm, friendly and very engaging. What more can you ask from a tutor!
Cressida T. replied
Thank you for your kind words Kelly. As my very youngest student, your daughter has helped me to refresh my skills for teaching children at the primary to secondary transition stage. I'm sure she's going to feel very confident when she starts Year 7 English in the autumn.

Cressida communicated with us very promptly to answer my initial questions and to provide examples of how her personal experience demonstrated how she may approach my daughters specific learning needs. We have not me yet but we are looking forward to doing so next week for the first session.

We've just started working with Cressida and I can see my daughter's confidence growing already. She is very approachable and clearly adapts her approach to each child's strengths and learning styles.
Cressida T. replied
Thank you for this feedback Claire. As a tutor giving students 1:1 attention, I have the luxury of getting to know each child much more quickly than I could in my classroom years. It's good to hear about the confidence boost as well. I must say that the spectacular improvement in your daughter's grades, and her delight in them, has been an extra bonus for me!

Cressida is tutoring my year 9 daughter in English. After only two lessons Cressida gave us the most detailed assessment we have ever had from any of her teachers in reports or verbally. Cressida has been able to identify where my daughter struggles and excels in English and has identified some very specific areas to improve and is now providing very tailored tutoring for her needs. Cressida was able to put my daughter at ease from the initial online meeting and my daughter enjoys working with her. I am so pleased we found Cressida in year 9 and feel the tailored tutoring she is doing with my daughter now will reap huge benefits and give her the confidence and skills to succeed in her GCSE course starting next year. I can’t recommend Cressida enough.
Cressida T. replied
This is good to know Vivien. I do find that the luxury we have as tutors is to be able to get to know our students fast and tailor everything we do to them as individuals. Everyone learns differently and it's so rewarding to be able to work to students' strengths and find different ways of tackling the things they find challenging.
