Applications of Mathematics is an SQA course distinct from Mathematics, sat at National 5 and Higher (Higher Applications of Mathematics was first taught in 2023/24). It carries substantial statistics content alongside finance, measurement and modelling, and a maths tutor who teaches the main Mathematics course doesn't automatically cover it. Tutoring helps most with the data-and-statistics outcomes (interpreting samples, correlation, the statistics that feed real decisions), with the contextual problem-solving the course is built around, and with the assignment component. If you're after this specifically, confirm the tutor offers Applications of Mathematics rather than only Mathematics: the two run as separate qualifications.
Scottish Higher is the standard Scottish sixth-year qualification, sat in S5 (age 16-17), and is the main route into Scottish university applications (which run on a different cycle from English UCAS). Most students take five Highers in S5, with strong applicants sitting another year of Advanced Highers in S6. The qualification is administered by Qualifications Scotland (formerly the SQA, renamed February 2026), with coursework and examination components. Tutoring helps most with subject content, with the coursework write-ups, and with exam-paper technique under SQA mark schemes. Match the tutor to SQA experience specifically. Higher is not interchangeable with A-level, despite frequently being compared.
