Psychology is one of the most-taken A-levels in the UK (AQA dominates, with Edexcel and OCR also active). Content covers approaches, biopsychology, research methods, and topic options: memory, attachment, social influence, psychopathology and others. The maths and statistics content surprises students who chose it as a humanities subject; the methodology paper is where many grades are decided. Tutoring helps most with research methods and statistics, with the long essays (which require named studies, evaluation and application), and with the AO3 evaluation skills. Look for tutors with psychology degrees and explicit UK-spec experience. The boards diverge.
A-level psychology surprises students with how much of it is research methods and statistics. That strand runs through every paper rather than sitting in its own unit, and it is where most of the lost marks are, particularly for students who chose the subject expecting it to be essay-based. Around a tenth of marks assess mathematical skills. The rest covers named studies which have to be recalled in detail, including procedures and findings, since questions frequently ask for evaluation of a specific study rather than a general point. Tutoring tends to split between the statistics and the discipline of writing evaluation that engages with methodology instead of listing criticisms.
A-levels are sat at the end of Year 13 (age 17-18) and are the standard UK university-entrance qualification, with most students taking 3 subjects (sometimes 4 plus an EPQ). Grades A*-E feed UCAS, and competitive university courses set offers at AAA or higher. Tutoring helps most with the step up from GCSE: A-levels demand independent learning, denser content, and exam technique that rewards structured argument or method-mark-aware working. Boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, CIE) diverge meaningfully, so match the tutor to the spec, especially in maths, sciences and modern languages where assessment differences are sharp.
