Sociology is offered at GCSE and A-level (AQA is the dominant A-level board) and covers theory (functionalism, Marxism, feminism, postmodernism), research methods, and topic units (education, family, crime, media, beliefs). It's essay-heavy and rewards precise use of theoretical terminology: students who 'get' the ideas often still lose marks on AO2/AO3 application and evaluation. Tutoring helps most with essay structure, with the research methods paper (which is more technical than students expect), and with the synoptic top-mark questions that demand integration across topics. A-level Sociology at AQA is three two-hour exams, each worth a third of the grade, with no coursework. Education and crime and deviance are compulsory, each paired with theory and methods, and the remaining paper covers two option topics such as families and households or the media. Theory and methods, including a methods-in-context question, carry 60 of the 240 marks. Research methods are examined in context: a 20-mark question asks students to evaluate a method, such as self-completion questionnaires, for researching an issue in education. The longest answers are 30-mark essays. The DfE content says the A level must not exclude students who are new to sociology, so the GCSE is not required. OCR has published a draft new A level, H583, for first teaching in 2027; it is not yet accredited.

A-levels are sat at the end of Year 13 (age 17-18) and are the standard UK university-entrance qualification, with most students taking 3 subjects (sometimes 4 plus an EPQ). Grades A*-E feed UCAS, and competitive university courses set offers at AAA or higher. Tutoring helps most with the step up from GCSE: A-levels demand independent learning, denser content, and exam technique that rewards structured argument or method-mark-aware working.
