11+ Spanish tutors

Spanish has overtaken German as the second most-popular MFL in UK schools, offered at GCSE, A-level and IB. The grammar load (subjunctive, ser/estar, preterite/imperfect) is the usual stumbling block, alongside the speaking exam where unprepared photo-card questions catch students out. A-level adds set-text and film study — La casa de Bernarda Alba, Volver, Pan's labyrinth and others, depending on board. Tutoring helps most with grammar consolidation at GCSE and with literary analysis in Spanish at A-level. Native fluency is necessary but not sufficient — look for tutors who know the specific spec (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas) and the assessed texts.

The 11+ is the entrance test for selective state grammar schools and many independent senior schools, sat in Year 6 (some independents sit it earlier). Tests vary by region: Kent, Bucks, Birmingham, Trafford, Lincolnshire, the Wirral and others differ on format and content, with GL Assessment, formerly CEM, ISEB Common Pre-Test, and bespoke school papers all in use. Most tests cover English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning in some combination. The verbal/non-verbal reasoning is the unfamiliar part — schools don't teach it. Tutoring helps most with format-specific past-paper practice; match the tutor to the actual test the child will sit.
