Kate
Experienced GCSE and A-level English Tutor
About
I am passionate about helping students of all abilities to build confidence and fulfil their potential in English. I hold a PGCE and CELTA teaching qualification, a PhD and First Class degree in English Literature, and am a former AQA A-level examiner. Drawing on over fifteen years of teaching experience across secondary schools, colleges and universities, I now focus on private tutoring for GCSE and A-level English.
My approach to tutoring is student-led. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method, I take the time to understand each individual's specific needs, learning style and goals before creating a tailored study plan built around tried and tested resources. For exam preparation, I draw on past papers and examiners' reports to ensure students are as well-prepared as possible. With all students I make time to assess and discuss progress at regular intervals.
I enjoy working with students across the full ability range — from those aiming for the highest grades to those who find English more challenging. Outside of tutoring I work as a Disability Advisor at a university, which helps me to understand the needs of students with SEND. Seeing learners find their way into the subject and gain in confidence is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. As a former university lecturer, I can also support students with academic writing up to degree level.
If you are looking for a tutor who combines exceptional subject knowledge with a genuine commitment to every student's progress, I would love to hear from you.

How we verify these
Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:
- Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
- Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.
The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Kate has been an excellent tutor to my 15 year old son, his grades have already improved in just three months. Kate has a good grasp of the GCSE syllabus and knows how to prepare him for each stage. It also helps that my son likes Kate and gets on well with her. Very professional.
Kate replied
Thanks for the feedback. It's been a pleasure working with Caleb.
